I am really glad that this bug found you. :D

Amazing ressurection! The time and effort you put into this car is incredible! Once a sad split with a big rear window is now a show class split that's going to and has already turned alot of heads! Do you have anymore pictures of the engine rebuild?

eurodub Thu Dec 01, 2011 12:11 pm

the engine is not restored. it implies far more things to do.
- first, the transmission is a brazilian  one... the engine a 40HP, to switch back to 25hp i will use a splitcase from 1959 and for the moment i have 3 gearboxes taken apart to assemble one.
- second, the 25hp was rebuilt at the factory and will need to be taken apart, cleaned measured and at least the gaskets replaced.
- third, the split is now 12v. to cross the line from 12 to 6v, i will need the starter, the battery, some bulbs, which i do not have at the current moment.
all i have is the sems, wiper motor, D regulator and generator.
- fourth, i am not a qualified mechanic so these things will get on the split during the next winter maybe.

all i care now is to have as many split correct parts, until i redo all the bodywork as it should.

show quality? neaah! you should se it in person one day!

Fantastic job! Only today I have time to read all the posts...

Congratulations!

p.s.- this was my favorite photo!

All the best wishes go out for you, all the sambanistas that helped me get the split to this point, to all the friends i met at Camberg 2011, to all the great people that kept me going when things were not so bright.

a big THANK YOU ! and Happy Holidays to you and those close to your hearts!

Mihai.

ps. hope you like the split with missing taillight lens, i just couldn't get the 1:1 one inside under the tree !

read all pages, amazing transformation. A lot of guts and elbow grease went into this one. Thumbs up to you and your car and best wishes for the new year.

"new" toy for the winter time. restored and working original. and on a very low budget as well.

now to man up and drill the holes in the dash..

eurodub Sat Feb 11, 2012 2:17 pm

since we had only negative temperatures these weeks i've been condemned to life in my own room, with only the internet close, and the garage closed shut with ice and snow.

that did not keep me from buying a Huf split steering column switch. the pod i had was opened up for a later switch so now i found the solution. besides that, my split had an oval hole in the steering tube, so a steering lock was attached there at some point of time. hopefully, the "new" lock won't interfere with the perohaus turn signal switch. :?

next big important thing was to buy a full set of split drums, backing plates and 4 bolt cylinders. will restore them and with new brake lines, the braking will be almost 100% original.

adding all these up, plus some tins and parts i missed for the 52split engine, plus some electric tune-ups, plus some accessories scheduled to arrive, it looks like a busy spring for me.

take care on the salty roads.

Well I hope your Keeping the Fiat warm too :)

eurodub Sat Feb 11, 2012 6:23 pm

the "bad" thing is that the garage was made just for a fiat and a split. they fit so tight that i have space just to pen the door to get inside the split. and with the fiat... is a complete routine.. push it backwards, get in, park it in, exit, push it forward.

the fiat is there now, staying dry.

right now the split brake setup is a reality.

what i have:
4 bolt backing plates front/rear
split drums front/rear
4 bolt split cylinders, 19mm front, 16mm rear + 2 extra 17mm
19 mm split master brake cylinder with solid complete metal reservoir
copper brake lines
all these will need resleeve and new pistons/seals but that's only a minor problem.

what i need:
front and rear brake shoes springs
a few (2-3) adjusters + adjuster spacers
split brake shoes but for the moment later ones will do, hopefully. anyone have a set for sale?

ahh yes.. spent all my cash on a set of split popouts. they're missing one latch and seals, but problem will be solved soon. these being said, my split will look like swisscheese in no time, with alll the extra holes.

spring is here, i did manage to open the garage. the awakening is scheduled for mid april.

very nice build... good job bringing back the split.

eurodub Mon Apr 23, 2012 12:20 pm

a month later... :D

still need a hinge and seals for the pop-outs but decided i'd run them like this for a while. i paid some $$ on them, and now i'm short on cash to buy new seals and afford a complete new hinge from Ricardo in Argentina. i tried to find some replacement rubber here but no luck. saw on John Henry's split some black pinch welting for the body frame ... but couldn't find it here no matter what i tried.

in the end of may i'll be on vacation so i replaced all the brake parts. the split cylinders will be stainless sleeved so if i'm lucky enough i'll test the split brakes on the Austrian Alps roads.

Amazing work on this car! Looks stunning, and the best part is that you seem to really use it!

If you don't wont to risk being unlucky on those roads, consider fitting a dual circuit master cylinder, a "volvo 240" reservoir fits right on the repro dual circuit cylinder and nothing more need to be changed...

eurodub Mon Apr 23, 2012 1:05 pm

i understand perfectly what you are saying.
i thought of that , in fact i did not get any brake fluid in yet, so i might put a dual circuit while i'm at it.

one month to go, lots of things to check /redo/ recheck

also changed all the oil, the rubber fuel lines, cleaned the fuel tank, changed the fuse panels with ones that had covers (usually i got fuses flying out hit by things in the trunk)

had an unpleasant surprise to find the early oval tank i had like 6 pinholes so i can't use it. and that delays my plans of having the dehne fuel gauge fitted.

I think it is possible to use a reservoar (only a plastic reservoar with one tap going in ) from a T2 on the dual circuit pump, and it uses a remote reservoar for filling. Then you can fill in the original place with the original reservoar.

It might be this reservoar:

:)

johan_l Tue Apr 24, 2012 2:24 pm

The nice thing with putting the reservoir on the cylinder itself is that it is as close to original as you can get I think... the split did not have a reservoir inside the trunk, yes, it is far easier to check and fill inside the trunk... but on an split you will have to crawl under the car to do this... Refilling should not be needed in an ok system and changing fluid still requires to go under the car... So I'm pleased with this solution, it makes the car a lot safer with minimum changes and fully reversible... :)

failing brakes is not that fun... but, I'm still having one circuit on the oval I use every summer... but I would sure consider fitting dual if to take it onto alp roads...

Kjell Roar Wed Apr 25, 2012 12:30 am

Sorry, forgot that. Sold my split ("big Window" converted) many years ago.

Nice car, Eurodub. I was in Bad Camberg and had a look :)
