Hi. I'd like to know what people are using in the after market speedometer rhelm. I'd like to use a Autometer 120mph speedo but the mechanical speedos now show 60mph at 1000 cable turns an hour, where the stock VW speedos show 60mph at 800 turns an hour. A 20% difference.
I guess my question after all that is what is a good easy sender to use with an electronic speedo. What do you use?
Have any Pics of the sender in the spindle?
Thanks in advance, J

| The sender in the spindle? There isn't one, just that hollow center on one side for the speedometer cable to pass through. |

friend of mine is running a garmin 200W GPS ... works as a speedometer and gives directions, etc., works off of satellites so no speedometer cable.
is like 2" tall and 4" wide and only about 1/2" thick. Easy to mount and is removeable in seconds. If I hadn't just redone my dash during my rebuild, I would've gone that route ... can be moved from vehicle to vehicle if you go on trips, etc.
Here's a link to some, I'll be getting one before long ...

| You can buy a gearbox that goes in the cable to correct the speed from any good speedo shop. |

While GPS is probably most accurate, most states don't recognize it as a legal speedometer (yet)....
I run VDO electronic speedo with Hall effect sender coupled by cable to left front spindle, fully able to calibrate it to any speed for any tire size you chose to run.... Incidentally my setup actually reads 60mph in a measure mile that takes 60 seconds to run (well at best we humans tried to calibrate it) ...... GPS says 59.9 mph.....Guess that is good enough....
IF nothing else the knowledge will help you make a decision...

Have had thoughts of putting a magnetic or reluctance wheel on drum (inside) and add sensor into brake backing plate, anybody done this? (something similar to sensor for ABS brakes).

On one of my buggies I used an electronic digital bicycle speedometer. I mounted the magnet to the left front drum and the sensor on the backing plate. Small and works great. Unit is programmable for tire diameter. |

| I went with a programmable electronic speedo made by VDO. It uses a magnetic pick up to send pulses to the speedo. I welded a nut head onto the axle and mounted the speedo right with it. I can calibrate it for any size tires I run. I like it so far, build is just about done. I'm away on vacation right now, but can post a few pics when I get home if anyone is interested. |
