developed a wicked squeek the other day so I decided it was time to change out all of the wheel bearings on my 73 Coupe. Pulled eveything last night and this morning started the re assembly. So far I have everything back together on the right rear but when I torqued the wheel nut to 235ft lbs (as Mr Bentley instructs) it feels way to tight...
I used lithium multi purpose bearing grease and put it all together just as it came out with new seals and bearings. I've done more wheel bearings than I can count but this is my 1st on my Ghia. I don't want to contradict the Bentley but should it be so tight?
Maybe my old ones were just that worn out... |

| If you don't get that castle nut on tight, the drum will work loose and then the splines of the axle will chew up the splines on the drum. When that happens, you won't be moving. 235/ft-lbs is about right. Tighten with confidence. |

| That's the correct torque. And after that I was about half a wheel nut flat from being able to alignt the cotter pin hole so I added some more torque till it lined up. I think I ended up somewhere 245 ft lbs when the cotter pin lined up. |

| ^^To add to that, never back down when torquing and you miss the cotter hole. Keep going until the next opening appears. |
