| I'm trying to do this and I think I've located the plugs but want to make sure. The drain plug is on the bottom and it looks like you need a big allen wrench to get it out. What size is this? Also, is the fill plug on the passenger side just in front of the axle? If so that's also an allen wrench. Is this one the same size? |

Both are 17mm.
Remove the fill first yo make sure it's not frozen. |

Will do. First it's off to the hardware store to see if I can scrounge up a whopping 17mm allen wrench.
Thanks! |

If you cant find one or want something better, the Bug shops like mooreparts and pacific customs sell 17mm ones that attach to a ratchet.

| you can also use a hex bolt head to open it. I cant remember 11/16 or something like that will work. Use double nuts on the other end to put a wrench on or just use vice grips. |

Places like Kragen an AutoZone usually have 3/8 inch drive 17mm hex "drive" for about $5..
Actually filler is on "drivers" side, not passenger side....

| Newbie question...do you check trans oil at each tune up, and if it's full, what tells you that it should be changed? |

This is actually my plan, I just haven't made it back to Lowes to pick up the pieces. I can't find a 17mm hex wrench locally to save my life. I want to do this TODAY.

I saw I mistyped that, just never edited it. Thanks for the clarification. |

Ok, I think the fill screw is frozen. Is it a right hand or left hand thread? Any tips on getting it unstuck?
BTW, a metric 10 size bolt will fit great. |

Holy moly I finally got the fill hole opened up. Whaddaya know, I can't feel a drop of fluid in there anywhere. There's a little because I can see it leaking out a little at the drain hole, but not nearly what it's supposed to be!
Now the dang drain hole is stuck and the loctite on my nuts and bolt contraption broke free. I'm not waiting another day for that to cure. When my wife gets back with the 17mm allen I bought today that's in the back seat of her car I'll work on the drain hole.
AC VW's are definitely for the hands-on hobby-oriented person. Works for me  |

Alright alright, got it all done.
It had about a little more than a quart and a half in it, so not as bad as I thought it would be. Man that stuff in there was burnt though, nasty smelling.
Just for this time I'm thinking I'll run it for a month or so and then change it again just for good measure.
Thanks for the tips and info guys. |
