One thing I hate about up the keep of my Ghia is adjusting the rear brakes. Once my brake pedal goes further than normal its time to adjust the rear brakes. What I normally do when this happens is to pull up my emergency brake one click and problem solved. Now I know that pulling up the e-brake one click is not a good idea but it works.
My question is in all of the years Volkswagen produced the Type 1 chassis did the engineers ever design an automatic drum brake adjuster like found on newer cars with rear drums? Also is this some thing that I can easy adapt to my 1969 Ghia? |

Not that I know of or have ever seen.... what is so hard about jacking up the rear of the car for five or ten minutes to adjust anyway? :?
Normally it's done at oil change/valve adjustment intervals anyway... if you have to do it more often then you might have an issue with sticking brakes due to bad flex hoses or wheel cyls???? |

Yep, adjusting your brakes is just part of owning an old dub...I happen to enjoy the quality time spent doing the maintenance on my cars...its calming. Also when you do your brakes you check other things too...like steering parts and tire wear...the fuel lines, etc...its all good. I dont really see an issue with pulling the hand brake up a few clicks to get a better pedal...but when you have to start doing that...its time to give the dub some love, so just set some time aside...get a frosty drink and some tools...start dubbin.

Here is the reason why.
My Ghis sits just a few inches off the ground. Yes I jack it up for the oil changes. Yes I do check stuff all the time but rear brake adjustment does not thrill me. I can never remember which star nut I spin up and which I spin down I always get them mixed up. So my little project takes for ever. I was just hoping for self adjusting rear drums instead of switching to rear disk. |

If you can't remember which way...
Get a "paint pen" or a silver "china marker" and draw an arrow in the direction you need to turn the stars on the back side of the backing plate right by that hole.

RIGHT is UP
LEFT is DOWN
Think of it as tightening a screw, same direction to tighten the shoes. |
