I just purchased what was supposed to be a 70 baja. I'm kind of skeptical on the year.
Looks to have a ball joint front end with 4 bolt wheels, wide 5 swingaxle rear. Looks like it has a 68 or earlier dash. 1600Dp with generator.
Where do I look for ID numbers so I can identify what I have?
Its a great bug just needs a bit of TLC. Clutch and wiring harness mainly.
Thanks all.

Your VIN's 3 digit would be 0 like 110 2000 001.

LOTRAT,
By the title its a 70. I will have to go search the body and pan and see whats what.
Any idea where to find where its stamped on the body, pan?
Its not in the windshield like I thought it would be.

Should be one uneder the front hood in the spare tire area i think. Also under the back seat on the pan.Post up some pics of the car. Most can tell the years by looking at the body.

Well,
Looks like I got myself a little issue here.
The pan is stamped with 116, coincides with a 66 pan.
Which would explain the swingaxle. Still cannot find a number on the body.
The engine is an AK number.
And the fun begins.
Looks like I better contact the seller I got it from.
Thanks all.

not nessicarily, if one of the VIN's matches you shouldent have any issues, especially if the body VIN matches the title your in good shape. because most of the time the idiots that check that stuff dont even know where the pan VIN is.

but if neither of the VIN's match you are in trouble

also just to clarify if the VIN matches with the title and just the year is wrong then that dosent matter either, i had a 69 squareback that the DMV kept insisting was previously registered as a 67. i showed them a sheet with with the VIN break downs by year and they still dident believe it, so that dosent matter either.

Is there any other place on the body they stamped the vin?
I looked all over the spare tire area and windshield area and found no stampings or code tags.
My bay bus is also stamped with the vin in the engine compartment. Is there a possibility the bugs were stamped there also? Not that it matters either seein how the rear area has already been hacked away and the baja kit installed.

chances are it got removed when the car was cut for a baja kit, check the pan # and if the pan # matches your pink then your fine, no problems. the year that the title says dosent matter

im in the same boat as you pan VIN says my car is a 66 vin starts with 116, but my car is registered as a 64 bug. the body is a 64 the pan is a 66. my insurance company called me to inform me there was an issue with the VIN i gave them so i have to call Tuesday and find out. the DMV had no issue's with registration though.

Thats where the discrepancy is. The id on the pan does not match the title and there is no id on the body.
So, just what is titled? The body or the pan. I am sure there are a whole lot of frankenstein bugs out there with mismatched bodys and pans so without an id how would one know what they truely have in their possession?

vwb5t Sun Aug 31, 2008 5:31 pm

my VIN is the pan but it should be the body cause thats the 64 part not the pan on mine. but since thats how it was registered when i bought it and thats the only number thats on any paper work thats what i went with

ok if you cant find any number on the body in the usual places and the frame VIN dosent match the title, your fucked  sorry contact the seller and see if he accidenty gave you the wrong pink, or what.

also i know a guy who thought he had a 63 bug by the title but the pan was a 67 but the body numbers matched. and the guy who changed the pans had moved the old pan numbers off of the pan and tacked it to the pan up by the pedals under the carpet, so maybe this guy did the same, just keep looking.

and if it turns out you dont have a title and you cant find a matching number then see if you can get the pan VIN run through the DMV and if its registered non-op or its still in the name of the guy you bought it from you can get a bill of sale that will work as good as a pink, or you can just claim it to be yours that your re-registering.

There are 3 locations on a 70. The pan of course but obviously that doesnt match. There is the vin in the spare tire area that usually ends up missing when cutting for a baja. And there is one on the driver side lower corner of the windshield. If none of these are there or dont match, you have a problem. If the P.O. doesnt want to make good on the deal then just use the 66 vin and go thorugh http://www.its-titles.com and get a title. It only costs $130 and you will have a title in 3 weeks. Just make sure its not stolen first, you can run a vin check with your local police or try this http://www.theftaz.azag.gov/index.php its supposed to work nationally.

Bugzyla
Have you used this title service before?
Has anyone on here used this service in the past?
I'm a bit apprehensive of trying it.

BugZyla.com Mon Sep 01, 2008 10:01 pm

I have used it 4 or 5 times, and have turned several people onto it. I have never had an issue, and neither has anyone else.

Thanks Bug.
I guess this is my only other option.

Why don't you make a new window VIN number plate? If the VIN is clear and you have the title, then the number is yours. The stock plate is just pop riveted to the dash.

Lotrat,
You know, I hadn't considering that. :? I did a title and theft search of all 50 states and both vin numbers came up clear. Boy, I feel like the caller on the " Mister Obvious Show" from Bob & Tom. Never made the connection.
