Except for this:
1364 - Altering or Removing Motor Vehicle Identification Numbers
Section 511(a) of Title 18 makes it a felony knowingly to remove, obliterate, tamper with, or alter an identification number for a road motor vehicle or a road motor vehicle part.
... you should be OK.
Be careful and consult someone who really knows before you do something like alter or make a new VIN# to match your pink slip. |

x2. My advice was given with the understanding that you have the correct pink for the car in your possession. You could always say the car was purchased with the homemade VIN plate.
Also, my 1972 has a VIN sticker by the drivers side door catch. You'll sleep better if you could find one matching number on the car. Did the PO say why the VIN plate on the dash, in the trunk, and maybe on the door frame are all missing? Looks bad to me. I'm sure it will look bad to the DMV too. I would have passed on buying the car.
Pan swaps happen alot on VW's, but you should have papers to match. Are you sure the seller isn't trying to scam you with a car you can't register? |
