My beloved Sparkie 412 has suddenly started running really rich and blowing dark smoke at rough idle. At the same time I noticed the fuel pump doesn't click off a second after I turn on the key, before starting, as it usually does. I hear a click coming from behind the panel on the passenger side back seat. I know that's where the Control Unit is, but is the fuel pump relay also there, and could that be the problem?
I just replaced all points, rotor, cap and condenser, so that part of the problem isn't the problem, though it acts like it isn't getting spark to all cylinders. I'm pretty sure it has to do with the fuel pump now running all the time and possibly over-fueling the system, but I don't know for sure. Anybody? |

| UPDATE: it turned out to be the Intake Air Sensor. I had a spare on hand and now the car runs great, though the fuel pump still runs nonstop when I turn on the key. I don't understand the relationship between the sensor and the fuel pump, but so long as the car is running well I guess it's okay. |

| The fuel pressure regulator will keep the pressure correct. The pump is designed to run continuously-- as long as the engine is running. The reason it stops when you turn the key to on, but not start, is a safety feature in case of an accident. Look elsewhere for a driveability problem cause. |
