| hi all just wandering if anyone else has lost all oil out of their vw bug engines? mine is 68 1600cc and it looks like it is spinning alittle oil from the sand seal from the crank pulley which is expected but im losing alot out of the oil filler vent tube the shoots straight to the bottom of the engine. any thoughts? |

| No, you shouldn't have any oil coming from the crank seal. The road draft tube should only drip a few drops after running hard - not leak any significant amount. Time to tear into the engine and check out what's going on. |

You should expect no oil leaks from a sand seal pulley.
Thats usually a done-deal even without adequate case venting.
A sand seal may let a little oil get around the nut and show up as
spin-art on the pulley face,.. but you can build up some teflon tape so it "packs" just before you fully torque it.
Buggies that go from zero to sixty in less than 5 seconds also face
additional pulley leakage problems from the g's...
but wouldn't that be a fun problem to have? |

| as far as the sand seal pulley, it is like you said spin art, but is comeing from the back of the pulley not my main concern, why would i have excessive oil cmeing frm the vent tube |

Check your sand-seal pulley... the early ones had NO steel ring where the rubber seal touches.
After a few thousand miles, a groove wore in the aluminum and they leaked from behind the pulley.
If there is a visable steel ring on the pulley hub, then the problem is with the seal.

Breather tube, is it totally stock and noone tampered with the baffeling? |

| It could be worn out jugs or broken rings. This would allow compression leak down. Do a compression test. |

There is a deflector plate that is supposed to go between the engine and the generator stand to keep oil from slinging up and out the vent tube. |

Yup, thats what I meant by "baffle".
It can be there , but aiming in the WRONG
direction making it not work. |

On a related note, does the oil smell like gas? I had a leaky pump that filled the crankcase with gas, causing oil/gas to leak out every hole imaginable, but the oil level was always acceptable. |

| Be sure to check for oil expansion. I have had more than my share of engines that have been brought to me overfilled and pumping oil out when hot. The oil will really expand quite alot after it is heated, especially in an air cooled engine. But yours does sound like excessive crank case pressure. |
