Kevin, your pictures are always AMAZING!

Here's one that regnbus just sent me of a sign along the trail. It was important enough that I thought I needed to share it with the crowd. I'll never see a crosswalk sign the same... EVER!!!

Skidmark wrote: It looks like I missed a good one... great pics guys! Anyone tow a large trailer (toy hauler size) up there, or did everyone flat tow and tent it?

I flat towed my buggy and sleeped in my tent in back of my truck, so did kevinrhanson. but none of us took a trailer/toy hauler. I saw a bunch of toyhaulers out there other people took.

Mike brought his camper and Mark brought his motorhome.

So how bad was 9 mile road? I mean for a big vehicle - my trailer is 30' ball to bumper, and the tow pig is a four door F250 Supercab with a long bed on it... and it's a bumper pull, not a fifth wheel. It gets ugly when the going gets tight!!!

Looks like you guys had a good time, I'm jelous. We don't have any places like that over here.

Skidmark Tue Sep 30, 2008 7:54 pm

I just measured the truck from front bumper to the centerline of the ball - 21'6"... That makes it 51'6" long hooked together!!

WOW!!! That looks like a great ride. I have got to hook up with you guys. Maybe the next Big Bear run.

I don't recall any hairpin turns if that's what you're asking about. I encountered a lot tighter turns going up to Big Bear the back way from Lucerne Valley.

Nine Mile Canyon road was long and steep and narrow. I had to keep my motor home down in first gear most of the time and run the heater on full blast to keep from overheating -- and I was going real slow so it took forever to get up there.

Coming back down was no picnic either. There were parts where I had it dropped down into first gear then too because second was too fast. My Class C is only 20 ft so even with my Thing in tow, I was not much longer than just your trailer alone.

Looks like I missed a good trip. I will not miss the next one.

My old motorhome was 36 feet by itself. I've towed my full sized quad cab 4x4 truck up there with that several times, besides towing with a 30' coach, a 34' coach, a 33' coach, and another 36' coach.

It's not a big deal if you go up in first gear.

I come down in 1st (sometimes 2nd) all the way, too. I lost my brakes coming down one year and that wasn't fun.

The road gets a little narrow at times and going around the outside turns in those sections can get a little nerve-racking. I actually prefer driving it at night, myself. The headlights help alert you and others that there's someone else on the road, and there's usually very few people on it at night anyway.

I'm sure we'll be doing it again next year with the group. It seemed to me like everybody liked the place.

Skidmark Tue Sep 30, 2008 8:40 pm

I was up there several years ago (like 10...) with just a truck and a dirt bike in the back. It wasn't a big deal under those circumstances. But my rig is REALLY long now so I am careful where I take it. Except when it's soft terrain - then I get it the whole thing stuck!

That's twice for me on Rasor Road, Ricko... out of two times going there.

Hi! New guy here...
I'm pretty familiar with where you guys went over the weekend...And I'm jealous!!!!...LOL
Pretty dangerous place for that Chevy to break down in 9-Mile Cyn! It can be a hairy drive in a standard vehicle, let alone with a toy box. Not as tight switchbacks as 18 from Lucerne to Big Bear. But I don't recommend it.
And that dustyBus is amazing!
I often go to the Kern Plateau area to off road in my Baja or on a dirt bike, or hike, or...Been going to the area for 30 years+
Monache Meadows - 1976

Sherman Jeep Trail Summit, earlier the same day

And I've even made a living up there building this house from a horse barn

My buddy Jeff and I have been talking about going off roading there for a while, but both of us have had our bugs apart for a while.
Mine is getting close

And Jeff came over in his Baja Sunday evening...not ready for an outing yet, but together enough to drive it a mile here and back...
And Jeff's co-worker Dave who lives in Lancaster daily drives his, so it is ready and so is he.
So I am really looking forward to getting my Bug back on the road and going along with you guys soon.

Wow dustymojave. Those are some cool pictures... and from way back. I looked at your photobucket file and you have some fantastic shots in there.

Let us know as soon as you and your buddies want to come out and play. It looks like we're going to be in your back yard on the next one!

Hopefully we'll meet up in one of the runs this season!
