When I push down on the pedal the engine almost stalls out but after a few seconds it will speed back up. It does this every time I try to accelerate. I have a 1500 single port engine. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? If so any ideas on how to fix it.

Start with the distributor (advance mechanism) and the carb's accelerator pump.

If it's a stock carb you should bend (carefully) the accelorator jet nozle end to squert right at the place where the butterfly opens against the side of the manifold. You don't want the fuel to hit the butterfly & have to go around. This will make it run crisper & get rid of any flat spots.

Your accelerator pump may also not be working at all or well enough.
To see if its working look down the throat of the carb(don't run the engine unless you like to get your eyebrows singed off). Wing up the throttle and look for a good, solid stream of gas for a second or so. Even at partial throttle you should see some shot as well.
If its not doing this it could be;
accel pump passages got trash in them
accel pump diaphram is cracked or just wore out
accel pump gasket not sealed and pulling in air
Is the stumble immediate of does it start to catch then fall over then pick up again. If its doing that it gets more complicated so hopefully its just in the pump shot. |

It was the timing and the heat tubes were clogged. Thanks for all of your help.
