Brand new 68 beetle, was the main transportation to the ski hill in Montana for 3 years for me and a couple friends. Spiked tires on all four and a grain shovel permanently strapped on the ski rack on the back in case we got stuck. Often only us and the 4 wheel drives made it to the hill.

My first car, a bone stock 1970 Beetle circa June 1980. The Bug went thru the "Cal-Look" scene the following year. I traded it to a friend for a 61 Ragtop?

Way back in the early to mid-1970s, British high school students like myself, could not afford to buy & run cars. Age 17 was the earliest at which one could obtain a provisional driving licence, as a trainee driver, requiring one to be accompanied by a fully qualified driver.
In the near future, age 18, will be the youngest age, at which one can obtain a full driving licence, after a minimum training period of one year and a minimum prescribed amount of professional training, from a qualified, registered instructor.
These days, even for a low-performance car, basic minimum legal insurance, costs £1,000 ~ £2,000 (note that £1·00 = US$1·75 approximately, at present currency exchange rates) or much more per year, for a newly qualified teenager. |

Having grown up in NYC, and having raised two kids in Elizabeth, NJ, I was always surprised that in most of the rest of the country it was normal for high school kids to have cars. Neither I, my wife nor my kids had cars while in high school. And when I saw movies about high school kids it was amazing to me that so many of them drove. We either took public transportation or we drove our kids back and forth. And I think we were all safer for it!! :D
Even through college I didn't have a car. And when it came time for my kids to want one (they went to local colleges) I didn't let them have one until they had gone through at least one semester of college first. I felt their having a car would have been a huge distraction to them at a time when they least needed to have one.
No intent here to lecture anyone. Just providing an alternative perspective! :D |

As the daily driver in college with my custom tube bumpers and 64 Chevy tail lights
As a show car circa 1984

I wasn't lucky enough to have pop's keep his '60 around long enough to buy it (last memory of thet car was riding around in the cubby behind the back seat) but my first car was a 'back. Not of the Square variety, but of the Kamm. 1972 Chevy Vega Kammback GT to be exact.
Had a blast in that thing, till I blew the trans & rear end out in one fell side-steppin'-the-clutch swoop. After that, I dropped a Buick 231 V6 in it and still enjoyed it. Not many people drove dubs at my high school, but there was one family that drove them almost exclusivly. Didn't hurt that they owned one of the only VW shops in town at the time. Still do, for that matter.
I eventually lost the Vega to some joker that promised he could get it smogged for me for $50. Took my car and my money. Never saw that car again, but it was enough to get me on the path to enlightenment. Only Volkswagens for me after that. |

Here was my third car in High School; 1971 AMC Javelin SST Hurst Edition.
Lifted front / rear with Centerline wheels and Pos-a-Traction (anyone remeber that brand) N-50-15 rear tires. It also had a Borg Warner close ratio 4-spd with Hurst shifter, 3:73 limited slip rear end, Doug Thorley headers, Mallory ignition, Holley carb, ported "Dog Leg" heads, high lift cam (can't remeber the lift), Mickey Thompson flywheel eca. eca......
"Fun" car that surprised a lot of Camaros and Mustangs.

VWs only, you say??
When I got my first car Volkswagens were few few and far between.
I had a 1951 Chevrolet Club Coupe.
It was eight years old at the time. |
