In 1976 when I turned 17 (damn, I'm OLD), my dad gave me his old car, a 1970 Buick LeSabre 4-door hardtop. 350 cu in, 4bbl, auto, I HATED THAT CAR!!!! Drove that car places partying with my friends where it was never meant to go. I remember pulling the muffler loose from the header pipe one night and laying under the car with a safety flare for light trying to slide the muffler back onto the pipe. Or the time I got it stuck in the edge of a farmer's field one Saturday night. Dad made me walk to the farmer's house on Sunday morning and ask him to pull me out.

4 1/2 years later when I totalled that car (took an army surplus 6X6 wrecker to do it) I cried. I've never had a car as good and tough since.

This was my Car in 1988, Purchased it from the owner who built it. I purchased it after it was stolen from him, I got it back on the road and drove it around during my High school years.

My first car, a 69 sedan (marina blue). My dad is a dental technician who deals w/ gold for crowns. He bought the car from our nextdoor neighbor for an ounce of gold (in the 1980s, worth around $300, I think). I had it painted white. The car has remained in our family all these years, and I am attempting to get it running well again, so that my 16 year old son can drive it. What's cool is that he has ALWAYS wanted that car. So we are learning to work on it, and the new 71 vert, together.

When I turned 16 in '89, I got the keys to a well-worn '71 passenger bus with a camper kit from a wrecked Westy. My pop had bought it in '76 from the butcher at the Red Owl for $200 with a blown motor.
He had painted it solid implement orange over the white/Sierra Gold.
'90 I replaced the motor with a short block and 88's from Mofoco.
In 91 I had it painted Arctic White.
I sold it in 94 with some significant frame rust issues.
Saw it on the road winter 96 in St Paul.
I followed the guy into a parking lot to talk to him and he got all mad at me because some of the white paint was flaking off the rain gutter and he didnt like the quality of the paint job....

In 1980 I got my first VW... a 1974 beetle. That was the first car in high school and the start of a long VW adventure. I sure drove the piss out of that car. Many good times... but sadly... I drove that car into the ground, and now it's probably a fence post, or part of a road sign on the highway. Long gone but not forgotten.

My first car I drove in HS was a '65 Bug, back in 1989. I grandmother bought it new and my dad bought it from her in '85 with only 32k miles! In the spring '91 I bought my first '64 ghia that I wrecked later that year. Then I traded the '65 bug for a full custom '67 sunroof bug. I sold that my senior year to pay for the rebuild of the ghia after I graduated. Man, I can't believe this started for me more than 20 years ago!

For my senior year I drove my family's Volvo 945 (station wagon, prob. widest volvo available), but during the same year I also restored my '70 Beetle

First car was a '59 Kombi....Mango Green/Seagull Grey. That's why I bought and restored the '60 Mango I have now.....closest I could get to the real thing. And it goes everywhere....Solvang last week, then to the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Sacramento this Saturday. Pictures in the Solvang 2008 Gallery. What a ride...............But I still wish I could get back that '59.

It depended on the weather. With snow and salt on the road, an 81 Cordoba that I still have. Good weather with no snow or salt, my 73 Super.

My appreciation for aircooled VWs started back in high school when I got to drive my family's new '66 Beetle (which I inherited) while refurbishing my '38 Plymouth (which I sold).
