View original topic: engine quits intermittently

It's a funny thing. Sometimes while driving my '69 KG 'vert, the engine just quits, just like I've turned it off from the ignition switch. And when I try to re-start, it starts up just fine. I've looked for loose wires around the coil and distributor, but all appears okay. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Could be bad contact in your ignition switch. You could test it by jiggling the key while its running to see if you can get it to quit. The next time it happens leave it turned on (don't move the key) and use a volt meter to test the power to the coil.

If you are still running a stock engine setup, double check your carburetor's shut-off solenoid hasn't wiggled loose. This can lead to random, sporadic engine quits...
Otherwise I too believe it sounds like a shorting wire somewhere.

This same thing happened to me in my '67 kombi for weeks. Seemingly random/sporadic engine quits. The common denominator turned out to be stopping on any downward hill - traffic light or stop sign kind of thing... the problem was a wire under the dash behind the interior panel would sway forward as I drove down the hill and the wire shorted against the nose and killed the engine..

Many thanks for the helpful replies. I will do as you both suggest.

Might double check the thin red wire coming off of the plus side of the battery cable end as well.

Luck!
