| Does anyone have experience with putting on an adapter to install a modern oil filter to their original engine? |

First you should let us know what your engine is since this will affect what or how things can be done to get a "spin on" oil filter...
The normal ways (from easier to more involved) are:
- install a filter pump (no stock exhaust possible)
- install a specially made oil pump that has an in and out port on the plate to feed an externally mounted oil filter. (these were popular for bay window bus owners as the pump and plate fit between the engine and the mustache bar)
- modification to the case at the oil galley from pump to oil pressure switch location (basically have to tap and plug this galley to force oil out of the replaced plate that has a single exit port built into it to send the oil to the spin-on oil filter externally mounted). Then the case must be modified at the main galley (near the oil pressure switch) to be drilled and tapped for a fitting that will ultimately receive the oil back from the oil filter.
The last option requires knowledge of the case (magnesium or aluminum) and some machining expertise.
EDIT:
Ooops! Forgot that there is also a relatively small filter available now that comes as part of the sump plate (which is replaced with this one) that contains a real filter... I have never used one of these myself but know they exist... It essentially replaces the stock sump plate with a slightly thicker one that provides room for the paper filter unit to sit inside and in the same place as the stock oil screen would have been... |

| The motor is a '67 1600cc.... 90.000-miles.... It was a replacement motor a previous owner burned the original '62 motor in '67 and replaced it at this time. So, this is motor number #2 in 46-years. |

They consensus over on the Engine forum was not very good for the sump plate filter:

I see that CIP carries one of these kits - $19 for replacment filters! |

Are you referring to the Maxi Pump 3?:

I've seen this mentioned here on the ghia forums, but the website only mentions compatibility with bugs, buses and vans. Can anyone confirm whether or not this will work on a ghia? This seems like it would be the best solution for me, because I already have a spin-on adapter and a remote oil cooler. With this, I should be able to run a hose to the filter, to the cooler, then back into this pump, right?
I've been debating over the "Maxi Filter Sump"
http://www.cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=202
(which comes with a "Lifetime Oil Filter"... whatever that means. If it were a true "Lifetime" filter, then why would they need to sell replacements???) It says you can clean the filter as often as you want, so apparently it's re-usable. But even if you replaced it every oil change, it's still not a bad deal when you think about it
BUT, after reading the aforementioned thread about these units, I would agree that having the filter on the suction side would be bad karma indeed.
I would like to hear some opinions about this system:

I'm not sure what is meant by this warning:
**WARNING** This pump and filter does NOT FIT stock mufflers with the pre-heat tube on the LEFT side of the muffler.
Which side is the left? Looking from which direction? When I am standing behind my ghia, looking at the engine, the preheat tube is on the RIGHT side. Does that mean this unit would fit with my exhaust?
Is there anyone who has been running this unit for a while? Are you happy with it?
Thanks,
