Does anyone know why the fuel nozzle is relocated on most of the early buggy tanks? Are there any concerns with spillage/ safety, maybe? My original tank (67') was fabricated this way and I am trying to avoid cutting the new tank and just cutting a new hole in the hood.

That's where I left mine. I think a lot of it has to do with
the angle of the tank (spillage). My tank is mounted from
the bottom in an angle iron frame, so I mounted it flat with
no angle. I kinda like the way it looks tucked in behind the
headlight. I even shortend the filler neck so that it doesn't
stick up so high.

New tanks are the best kind to cut. Cut off the filler neck, line it up with the existing hole in your hood, and get it professionaly welded.
Relocating the filler to the rear of the tank will slightly increase its capacity. Also, by moving the filler to the rear of the tank and away from the headlight, it will reduce the chances of fuel spillage (and fire) in a front end collision. Plus, eliminating the stock protruding filler neck from the front of the hood is a sure way to improve any buggy's looks.

| I think that most people move it because most people think it looks like pooh beside the headlight. |

For me it was aesthetics.....
Like others have said, it looks like pooh down by head light and its hard to get a nice looking "cap" treatment down there over the curve....

| When you move the neck make sure you put in a vent for it to breath. I left mine next to the headlight, but shortened it down so it does not stick out. If you paint the gas cap the came color as the car you can hardly see it. |

Thats a great idea too. maybe mitering the neck to make it level. |

| you should make a bracket to support the front of the gas tank also. It keeps the front fenders from cracking with all that weight up there. you just come off the front beam where the body used to bolt to it & support it from underneath. |

Sorry I didn't mean it to be hurtful, it's just my opinion that I think many share. To me it just seems like the builder cut a corner if they don't move the filler cap.
It should also be noted that pooh is not as bad as poop or crap or s#!%. |

Hey um, wall, have you trial fitted your hood because theres a big lump in the front of that tank. My old tank which was trash and went to the scrap yard was too high in the front so some previous person too a hammer to it. Also, definitely needs a front support. Mine did exactly what somebody said and cracked(broke it off actually) the front piece that spans across the fenders in front of the tank.
I have not yet even begun to start restoring my fiberglass. I'm deep into fixing the motor that was "running great when we parked it". |

| The new tank is the same (year) as the old tank, so it should fit like a glove. I am definitely going to make front supports tho. |

| There are pic's of supports on the samba here somewhere. They are easy to make. I made mine out of 1/4"square tubing & drilled a hole in it that I bolted threw with big washers on top to hold down the tank. |

Here is a front mount I made for a Manx I was working on.
The buggy was assembled in 1968 without the braces that B.F. Meyers delivered with it. You can see a small crack in the fiberglass. I used the original VW fuel tank hold down clamps thru the original fuel tank mounting bolt holes, to bolt it all together. |

| I am doing like what Dale M has posted. I have purchased a polished fuel filler door assy from All Sales part # 6044. It is the smallest diameter made and it fits a late model durango I believe the outer diameter is only 5-1/2" across. Fits pretty good right in the rear center area where i will relocate the the filler neck. |
