If you were going to drive your bug all the way around the world, what would you take along???

Besides everything...

whutdidyousay Sat Sep 06, 2008 9:10 pm

a big boat.... But dosen't a bug float?.... I'll still take the boat, bugs don't like salt water.

I would not attempt it. period.

An entourage. With a flat deck.

But seriously, you'd need a trailer to haul everything you'd need. And it still wouldn't be enough.
Around Europe maybe, or around North America, but the world? Really? That's the biggest place in the whole wide world!!

Hmmmm. I would bring both my junkyard tool bags (enough tools to do anything), spare spark plugs, plug wires, timing light, air filters, a couple sets of spare points, a knife, electrical tape, Duct tape (can't go anywhere without that), jumper cables, spare fuses, couple cans of brake clean (the good stuff), tire plugs, tire pump, Brake fluid, trans gear oil (for me some 70W valvoline), clutch cable, hose clamps, and a crap load of oil.

I am sure I missed some things but that is all I can think of within the 6 minutes I took to type this.

Someone else told me that... Are you kidding... It seems I could service a bug just about anywhere... I will be taking lots of parts and high wear items but come on? A trailer? For what???

If you cant duck it F$#% it..

Yea a crap load of oil... Thats the main extra weight. and some extra gas for those remote places... Im taking all kinds of shit. seals, bearings, gaskets, cylinders, break shoes, voltage regs, distributor caps, extra electronic ignition, extra points and condensers, extra generator, extra starter, extra carb, most intricate tools and all I would generally need,, a fire extinguisher, and much more... Still that will all fit along with my computer, cameras and clothes with a bit of room to spare... Maybe for all my TP...

I know Im crazy, but thats what makes it fun...

Id love to take my VW on a small tour of the Mediterranean. I love driving my VWs but its somewhat limited to around town because I don't trust any of these old parts.

bon2198 Sat Sep 06, 2008 9:52 pm

literally a spare of everything. would have to take out all the seats except for the drivers of course to have room for everything.

I'd take a VW bus!

My wife just told me she saw a program on TV about an older couple who drove a Beetle around the world when they were young and plan to do it again and film it. It will be on TV. Don't know anymore about it.

Have you ever done any backpacking? Give it a try before you finalize your list of what to take.

Having to carry everything on your back for miles gives you a much clearer idea on what is really necessary and what isn't.

Instead of carrying everything you might also have sets of spares shipped to different locations along your route so if and when something breaks you might not have it with you, but you don't have to send to halfway across the planet to get it.

If you DO do this please create a blog and keep us informed! Of course there are also ACVW fans all over the world that would give you a hand if you got into trouble.

Thanks I have done a tremendous amount of traveling.. As well as extended trips out in the world... I recently rode my KTM Adventure motorcycle from here to Guatemala and back...

I am certainly not taking everything. Actually I am trying to go as light as possible.

That is why Im taking my beloved Bug instead of the motorcycle... Much easier to fix in the middle of nowhere...
