Here are some pics I took this afternoon after I drove up there. Needs work is an understatement. He tells me how the windshield is broken and it's been leaking and rotted the front floor, when in reality the windshield lip is almost nonexistant and water has been POURING into this thing for Lord know how long. There's actually moss growing on the dash!!

Odd angle for the shifter, wouldn't you say??

I wouldn't be suprised if that duct tape was holding the nose on ;)

T2 Bus, Type 4 Engine - replacement hose from heat tube body to heat exchanger

This is a general whine about the quality of reproduction parts.

One of my original hoses from the heat tube duct on the body to the heat exchanger finally gave up and melted around one end, considering the temperatures this thing has had to put up with over the years, I think it has done pretty well. (It even had the original VW crimped clips on it). I contacted a VW parts yard I use to try and source an original second hand one, but they refuse to sell them, for the obvious reasons they dispose of them all.

Here is the worn out OG original hose (VW Part number 113 255 358 D) alongside it's 'generic' pattern replacement (after searching around suppliers, I found that apparently the original part is no longer available - Note from the picture that the replacement is sold “to fit all T2 models 68-79" and is considerably longer, and appears more suited to a T1 1600cc):

It will fit though with some encouragement, but I had to push the hose up quite a way onto the body heat tube duct to gain enough room to then pull it back down and then squeeze the concertina together to fit and squeeze in the gap, then attach to the heat exchanger end. This is where the problem started.

The metal skirt inside would not grip and kept twisting , and would not make a good seal, and although the diameter of the pipe is allegedly supposed to be adequate, it was oversized by a few millimetres compared to the original.

I took it back off and took the problem skirt out of the hose, so I could gently slice the seam to allow some adjustment for a better seal when I tightened up the new jubilee clips. Here is the new tube with the metal skirt removed:

I had to stop and look at that skirt again, at first I thought it was made from a tuna fish tin :? , but on closer inspection, I found it to be made from a paint varnish tin “made in Beijing”!!!!! :

It was outdoors, well ventilated, so I put on a P3 disposable mask and some throw away gloves (only because I’m lucky enough to have plenty of this stuff immediately at hand) picked up the old hose, got a polythene bag, and removed the original metal skirt and gently prized away the CAF (Compressed Asbestos Fibre) skirt gasket/joint:

I then soaked the metal skirt in water and scraped any asbestos residue into the polythene, then bagged all the contaminated stuff up for safe disposal with hazardous wastes (I’m a time served approved electrician, so just went into “risk assessment” and “method statement” mode, the task sheets have been drilled into us by the union and management ).

I then used the original metal skirt, and guess what - it fitted perfectly!

The new hose has some sort of hard plastic fibre skirt instead of the original CAF for I assume some sort of heat resistance, but I’m dubious it will last the decades the OG one did, If it lasts a few months I’ll be amazed. In the meantime, I’m going to keep an eye out for a used or NOS original hose when at swap meets or jumbles.

Anyway, whine over, this should have been a simple ten minute job, but instead turned into a saga because of sub-standard junk repro parts.

I reckon it required / requires extensive bodywork and turned into a money pit. I'm glad I took my time and waited for an unrestored solid vehicle this time round, saves a stack of cash in the long run, unless you are a confident / competent welder, it's always going to cost a stack to outsource large amounts of that type of work if you want a good job done.

I hear that. I replaced my license plate light seal less than a year ago and of course it's super cracked already. I go to replace it with another one, from a different vendor this time, and the thing doesn't fit right. Also, it appears it's starting to crack ALREADY.

He said about once a month. Judging by his definition of "good" I would say his definition of once a month is probably a little off too.

if a $40 price tag for a $10 part was not enough
it looks to be broken in the upper corner of the pass side
