Not unless there is some real reason like they are super overpriced or crazy prices for junk. In general, I would say no. This applies to active auctions. Once they are completed, post away.

"Hey, look at this POS that just sold for $20K on eBay" is fine.

Otherwise the site gets overrun with eBay links based on opinions of what is "overpriced" and violates our no eBay rule.

Then dont get involved with Type 3's

This happens with all types for sure. A big attraction to bays for me is their avalability-relatively cheap parts and the ability to still buy a nice all original unmolested bus at a decent price.

That's also a big part of the problem. Anyone with a fleeting fancy can get one. And then when they get tired of it because they don't keep it from turning into a junker they can just go get another one or else a Honda. Whatever their next fancy is.

That will change. These will continue to get parted out and destroyed until they have priced themselves out of the market. Then us with parts stashes and our buses will be left.

Stock up on good buses guys.

Thats the same story with any project-be it a car or a deck for your yard. Human nature is just that. Only time will tell.

I think having one maybe two nice clean original busses is good. I dont want to start hoarding and stocking up on parts I most likley wont use. Ive already been down that road with T3's

Thats it there. Buy what you want to keep now and you wont have to worry about it later. Bought the Westy I wanted, and I'll have it forever, got my ratty 69 Deluxe, now all I need is my 9 passenger 71 and I'm through. Then all I have to do is keep them in good repair until I die and some loser tries to milk my wife out of them for pennies during her time of grief.

Waitaminute.

just want to be clear i try and either sell or just give useful parts away, i respect all that you guys are saying but as notch points out, all of our bitching on the internet isn't going to change human nature or what's happening with our bays, the best we can do is when we see a good savable bus going for cheap is to pick it up and either pass it off to someone who you know is going to fix it or put a little cash into it and resell as drivable.

beyond that there are plenty of not worth it buses out there and no one can argue that, so with those part them out and keep the others good buses on the road, there's no way in hell i'm going to buy a good bus rip it apart for parts and then send it to the crusher, i can agree that is just wrong, it's not like they are making repo frames and all the sheet metal now or anything.....

bottom line savable is savable and some are just lost causes.

Well, geez. using the samba classifieds to sell VW parts is one thing, but... selling wagons? okay, maybe you can pull your parts around shows and stuff, but my gripe here is this. if you are going to sell something like some wagons, couldn't you at least remove all the crap sitting in them for the pictures? sort of obscures most of the item itself.

Being an avid early T3 guy Ive already been through this. Years ago during the late 80's early 90's when I first got into VWs I would frequent wrecking/junk yars. The common ones like pick a part-u pull it kinda thing. Well T3s as well as other VWs where layin around every where! I didnt think twice about getting T3 stuff. Well finding any ACVW part in a junk yard let alone a T3 one is a by gone era-no more. Now everything is sourced from the net for the most part if you want to keep a notchback alive. And even then its like I own a split window bug half the time because the prices are high and you need to be on the secret list to even be told that something is becoming available

It will happen to the bay in one way shape or form. Enjoy it while you can-I am. Just look at what people are asking for nice restored & original bays already

BusterBrown Wed Mar 24, 2010 8:16 am

Man, I'm seeing this over and over. Here we have a locking gas cap for a bay window, going for only 95 euros. (That's, what, $150?). I just received mine, new, from Bus Depot for $30. Looks exactly the same. Good quality, German made, stainless steel.

Just a reminder; always check Bus Depot, Wolfsburg West, West Coast Metric, Gowesty, etc, etc. before buying expensive used or "OEM" parts. You could be paying way too much. There are all kinds of parts still being made for our bays, and available through the companies above. Don't be slapping yourselves in the forehead after you've bought some high dollar part, only to see it much cheaper later.

vw76westy Wed Mar 24, 2010 10:32 am

there is a differance in value
between a factory vw NOS part
& oem made in germany

a factory original is worth alot more to someone doing a complete
factory resto than a oem repoduction

although the fact that someone wants a $120 premeium for nos
is why we are here

once you start buying some of this new stuff you'll understand why
original used is so expensive compared to a new crap

Actually I have already bought quite a bit of the "new stuff" you mentioned, and so far the quality is excellent. Not that the "crap" isn't out there too. That's why I posted here about the $30 locking cap I bought. Awesome quality, german made, stainless and quite indistinguishable from the original. If I were to go about refurbishing my 78 westy with parts along the lines of $120 gas caps, well, the final expense sheet could be unbelievable, and somewhat embarrassing.

I was looking at it thinking it was pretty awesome. Until I looked at the specified age of it. Now I see why you listed it here. Good call!
