Has anyone figure out why 71 busses have horn issues?I have had three of them and all have the same horn issue which is when you turn the wheel(steering,goin down the road) the horn decides to beep,make a left turn and horn goes off make a right turn and it doesnt,wait but then later thr right turn will make the horn go off,lol .Vw's and their personalities-I cant be the only one who has experienced this any suggestions?I am assuming it has something to do with the wire that runs down the middle of the steering colum .If anyone know how to fix this without disturbing original set up I would greatly appreciate it,thank you so much-..rmm chad

Ohhhh....just a few :wink: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/search.php?search..._chars=200

Could be lots of things, is the insulator plastic between the ign switch housing and column tube in place? how about the plastic ring at the floor plate?, is the wire clipped into it's holder under the floor plate? or is it fowling the steering coupler? Do you use a large dangly metal keychain?

well I dont have a heavy key chain for sure.I guess I am wondering...should I replace the wire that goes from horn button to the bottom?I have disconnected horn to make it stop going off,but driving my baby w/o a horn is scary because people seem to not see a pristine vw while driving and I would freak out if someone sideswiped me!

I had a dangley key chain made from fishing swivels and my '69 camper honked on right turns.

The wire in the shaft is the ground, it could be bare metal and still work and since the horn works it's doing it's job, your problem lies somewhere on the outer column tube or the wire connecting the bottom of it to the horn.

If you remove the cover at the base of the steering column, and it looks like this;

replace the broken wire, so it looks like this;

You might want to check your steering coupling disc while you're at it too;

Don't mean to hijack but can someone explain or show a picture of where the ground wire from the horn connects?
