Well, maybe not so much a surprize as just an experience. Took Tahlulah (the 79) fishing at Deception Pass Park on Monday, and on my way home passed 5, count'em 5 Bays coming the other direction. Not at the same time, so it wasn't like a caravan, just folks tooling around the island. Each one waved in turn at me as we passed. I ride motorcycles also, and maybe 25 to 50 % of them will return a wave. Most act like they never see you. My point is this, I have yet to find a nasty rude person in a bus. I have met a couple of the members here on the Samba and they have all been very cool people without exception. You guys know who you are, and are a credit to the community. Sorry if this is boring, just wanted to share my experience and thoughts. :D

I'd wave every time from my bus, or even when I'm in one of my other cars--you have to be cool and a bit eccentric to drive a bus--that's the whole point!! Everyone else is just in their NORMAL car,
and they probably aren't enjoying the ride like we are.

I've never met anyone in a bus, or any VW (aircooled that is)
who was uncool---same with drummers,
we are kindred spirits, i suppose.

So keep on driving the bus and keep on waving!!

i did a post on this sorta thing about the "bus brotherhood" and it seems that everyone who has a bus likes to wave, except the people who own bays in southern california. apparently most of the socal bays are driven by people who dont like to wave. go figure.

i can post the link to that forum if you want it

Spammy, Are you referring to this poll?
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3...b43d023d5.
If so, how did you arrive at your conclusion that "most of the socal bays are driven by people who don't like to wave"? There were 137 respondents to your poll. Of the 137, 112 said they waved, eight said they hate everybody, one gives the finger, and the remaining sixteen live in a one-bus town. I'll go out on a limb and say the sixteen in the one-bus town do not reside in southern California; but let's say the nasty nine do. By my math, approximately 25 (18.2%) of your respondents either don't wave because there are no other buses in their town, or they don't feel so inclined. To me, 'most' means more than 50% of something. As a Bay owner, born and raised in southern California and on VWs, I'm curious; how do you define 'most'?

over the pond we all wave - apart from the folks who have hired a bus for a holiday - when you wave at them they just have this scared look like you're playing a banjo and starred in Deliverance

i was talking to the g/f about this earlier this week and came to the conclusion i should start flipping off the other bus drivers as EVERYONE waves (ac's) ya know just to be different, a conversation in jest, but the point is i've yet pass a bay or splity in the pnw without a wave, vagon owners are yuppie piles of puke though, 90% of them are anal bastards who like the smell of their own smug. they come across to me as the wanna-be vwer's like they bought it just to say they have a bus, i've meet a few nice ones in person but i swear every time i pass one on the freeway i'll give a wave and get a blank stank eye stare , only once have i been waved at from a vangon owner, i gleefully waved back!! just my experience in my 4-5 months here and owning a bus, you can't tell me i'm wrong, as i'd like to be wrong, but it's just been what my experience has been thus far. i love bays and splitty owners, i wuv you guys! haha gay.

I wave at all buses here in SD. I actually waved at a women in a bay this morning. She waved back. Almost all have waved back here in San Diego.

This is obviously going to be a skewed sample as self reports are horribly inaccurate and your sample is far from random. Most of us are on here for the bus community, of course we are going to wave. The ones who don't wave probably are not regulars here.

No conclusion can be made from this poll except that samba bus owners say they wave. It says noting about California owners, hell I voted on it and I am in Washington.

VWBusrepairman Wed Sep 10, 2008 12:22 pm

I always wave as well. There is always a westy passing by when I happen to be driving a non-bus vehicle but I wave regardless.

Funny, I've drove my bay in SoCal for 15 years and it's pretty rare when I don't get a wave. Maybe its a long beach thing. Although there are some splitty owners who are too snobbish to wave, but more times than not, I get a wave. Hell I get them from people in non VWs as well.

I drive my 71 (BINDLE) all over the So Cal coast, up and down PCH, everybody smiles, waves, gives the peace sign V. It's just fun! Try and be cool, but don't take it too personal.
By the way do you know what the V sign means? It a Roman ordering 5 beers. Did you hear the rim shot in the back ground?

theizzardking Wed Sep 10, 2008 1:58 pm

i know that they originally used it in England first, but reversed, to taunt the french bow men after they survived an arrow attack, they did this because when they captured a french archer they would chop off their middle and pointer finger to stop them from using a bow against them in the next battle, and would flash the reversed peace sing to taunt the french. i like this story because i hate the french.(have been there numerous times each time i meet just the rudest nastiest people, i mean what kind of grandma cuts in front of you in line then flips you off without a word being said?)
how this every became and American term for peace and f-u , is beyond me. anybody else actually know (sorry i'm a sucker for useless information)

borninabus Wed Sep 10, 2008 2:38 pm

i wonder if french bus drivers wave back? and what's up w/ New Beetle drivers. don't they know they are driving a beetle!?!

heerojyuy Wed Sep 10, 2008 2:51 pm

I was up on SanJuan Island last September-ish and was surprised to find three or four fellow bays. One also appeared to be camping along the roads as I was.

yes, vanagons are no good. neither are beetles (old or new) in long beach, they seem to think theyr too good for you even if you happen to have a type 1 engine in the back.
