hello
i am getting ready to install my new motor. It would really be easier to install the exhaust and all the bottom tin before installing the motor. does this work to have all the parts on the motor plus the breast plate and exhaust then install the MOTOR...my exhaust is the euro tri mite...no header..
CAN THIS BE DONE?
thanks
matt

| Quick answer is no. The tin at the rear of the motor has to go on after the motor is in. Also, if you have extras like dual carbs, they have to go on after too. |

| I remove the exhaust first (Quiet exhaust) before removing my engine, and re-install it after the engine is in. I like the special brass nuts with regular 8 x 1.25mm thread and use an 11mm wrench. I've ground down box wrenches to obtain additional clearance. If you want to stay with steel nuts, I like the JIS (Japanese) nuts from auto stores or Ace Hardware that have same thread pitch but use a 12mm wrench instead of the stock VW 13mm. |

The only part that needs to come off is the rear most piece of tin, everything else is fine. When I pull a motor, I leave the exhaust on, so the motor can sit on it's heat exchangers, instead of the somewhat 'fragile' magnesium case.
It does stink at this point to have dual carbs, makes it take a lot longer to pull a motor. leave the exhaust on, I see no reason at all to take it off, it doesn't drastically affect clearance, it gives you something to hold onto while you work the motor into place.
Just from my experience. |

| I never pull the exhaust unless the car has been rear ended. |

| I have the two peashooters and it helped to have them in place to wiggle the engine in and line it up with the trans and tip it to slide onto the shaft. Keep it attached if you can. |

Hey matty,
Rear most tin needs to come off, but thats it.
I too like to leave the exhaust on to use as a place to grab the motor by. Watch the alternator's shaft on the cars upper most rear apron... and pull the top pulley if you need more clearance. They can leave a nice scratch on freash paint if you arent paying attention. |
