Just wanted to introduce myself. Monday I bought a 71 Bay. It runs but the brakes are bad and the back is stuffed with parts, the seats are not installed but they are there. I'm going to pick it up this weekend. I've not owned a VW in twenty five years so I will probably be bugging you all for advice. The po has a small one gallon tank in the engine bay to show that the motor runs and the fuel line is clamped off, he say's the fuel in the tank is old and needs to be drained, also he says the oil temp gets high if run for a while (possible timing issues?) he also just installed duel solex carbs removing the single carb that was on it. He said it has a lightened crank and high lift cam and was built by Gene Burg? Like I said I've been away from VW's along time and back then I was into Beetles. Also the Bus has been in East Tennessee only three years before that it spent it's life in Washington State. There is minimal rust on the Bus. I will post pics at the first of the week.
Thanks

| Thanks for the welcome. I picked it up for $1200. When I saw the lack of rust I didn't even hagle with him. The nose of my bus looks pretty much like yours. |

welcome to The Samba.
Let me be the first to say, get the Bentley, Muir and if your going to be hard core Tom Wilson book's.
Pay for good tools cheaper than a good mechanic and you'll never need the latter agen.
Dude nice score $1200 for low rust bus with a Gene Burg engine in it is like finding $1200.
search is your friend. 8) |

Welcome to the Samba....
I too live in east tn...Knoxvolksmotorclub.com....
Sounds like the brake problem could be the lack of a vacuum hose from the dual carb intakes. On the '71, there was a vacuum hose from the intake to the vacuum assist booster... Just a guess...
Feel free to PM me if you want...

Brad I was going to try to make it to the Knoxvolksmotorclub get together Saturday but I was picking up my Bus. I'm going to try and make it to the next one. I got the brakes working. It is amazing what adding some brake fluid will do. Now I have to figure out what the deal is with the gas tank is and see if I can find all the fasteners for the engine tin.
