The stupid 46mm EMPI "hammer bar" is a piece o' crap. Broke my heavy duty 3/4 inch extension and didn't loosen the axle nuts a bit (even though I soaked them in PB Blaster for days) . I now will resort to my impact gun damnit! Who sells a 46mm socket for my impact gun! Snap-On?
Anyhoo, thanks to anyone with info. |

| Snap On, Mac Tools....any of the major tool companies will have em. I would spend the money on a good one rather than going to Harbor Freight or Sears. |

| I got mine from Home Depot online.........No problems to date, and I have used it at least twenty times........some times on my pnuematic and others with a socket bar and 4' pipe extension. Can't tell you an exact price, but I know I bought 8 large sockets for under $75. |

| I would argue that the tool that broke (your heavy duty breaker bar) may be the piece of crap. Try another breaker bar with a 5 foot piece of pipe over the end as a cheater bar. Good luck. |

For the larger sockets, I've found that HF's 'impact' sockets are OK for my own auto to 1-ton truck needs. I prefer getting 1" drive if possible, for a little extra beef. Seems like I got that one in a 'loose item' bin @ HF for $12.-14.
OTOH Toolhawker has the 1/2' drive 46mm impact by SK(good quality) for $27. http://www.toolhawker.com/46mm-Front-Wheel-Bearing...34404.html
ToolSource has a 1" drive SK socket for $35.
http://www.toolsource.com/drive-metric-impact-socket-46mm-p-55883.html?sourceid=bizrate
But they even have a 3/4" Stahlwille for only $45., just for a German-tool purist. lol
Lotsa choices.

B.S. That $9 tool is about the finest axle nut tool this side of a $300 compressor and impact wrench. |

Yea those things are amazing. And I'd think you'd have to spend more than $300 for an air setup that would remove that nut... |

I used this $11 EMPI socket with a breaker bar and a pipe. Worked like a champ.

Buy this one at Sears in 6 point & 3/4" drive. It is 1/1000 larger but who cares.

| Maybe your right, it might be the extension that is the problem. Is there a 3/4 cheater bar/extension without a swivel tip? Just a solid piece of metal that cannot break at the swivel. |

I think the point is that either you get a standard strength steel socket , with an adequate length breaker bar and do it manually, or you go the route of the impact-ready socket and use an air-drill (i.e. Sears item) to hammer it loose. Either one will work.
Don't use the EMPI socket with pneumatics, lest it shatter in your face. leave that to guys like me ;)
There are of course conversion pieces to go from a 3/4" to 1/2" drive if that's your set. However, it may or may not cause the converter to fail. Remember that Sears warranties their hand tools, so it may be worth a try - on them. |

I use to do it your way, but a 3/4 or 1" DRIVE SOCKET AND BREAKER BAR (THE SLIDING TYPE OF BAR. THE MALE PART OF THE BREAKER BAR HAS A HOLE IN AND A SOLID BAR SLIDES THRU IT)
THEN I USE A OLD MOTORCYCLE/THREE WHEELER FORK TUBE AS A CHEATER BAR.
GO TO A NAPA STORE AND IT COSTS ABOUT 45 OR 50 FOR EVERYTHING |

Quote: This tool has been designed to remove the rear axle nut for brake inspection and service. The removal of this sometimes frozen nut is accomplished with a force greater than that of an impact wrench. To use, simply remove the cotter pin holding the axle nut on and place the tool over the nut. Insert a standard 1/2 inch breaker bar or ratchet, and while applying arm pressure, strike the tool with a hammer knocking the nut loose. 46mm for 1963 1500cc and later buses.

The removal tool and BFH works every time, with a lot of agressive hammering!!! I never use a breaker bar here--but in other similar situations, I put a 3/4" drive breaker bar on, and a long piece of steel pipe over it to produce a lever arm-- M=f x d
"Work smarter not harder" sometimes actually works in the real world.

| One last idea here even though it is probably not a good idea. How about putting my 1/2 impact wrench on the EMPI "hammer bar thing"? This might be able to loosen it just enough to do the rest with a hammer. I just dont want to beat the crap out of this thing and end up hitting my rims. |
