Anyone have the low down on a so-called "equivalent" oil filter
made by STP to replace the Mahle Audi/VW type?
Getting ready for a long trip--need to change oil/filter.
Cheers....... :?: |

| Not sure about STP, but Fram makes two filters for the bus. One is # PH3614 and is a "standard" filter, the other is #TG3675 and is the "Tough Guard" filter. Only difference I see is that the TG filter is about 1/4 again the length of the standard filter and has a tiny bit more capacity and being a bit longer in length, has more filter material. |

| Go look at your FLAPS, they have the little books that'll tell you exactly which one to buy. |

Thanks,
let me clarify:
Filter goes onto aftermarket full flow setup--it is a very small size--
Mahle Audi/VW style is the "correct" one--just want to be sure STP equal
will work with the high oil pressure associated with this setup?
Also have aftermarket deep sump and HD oil pump (30mm , I recall?)
cheers..... |

my opinion
ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!! those STP filters can and do pop, along with the fram as well. please take the time and get a couple before you go on your trip you will be most happy to take the time to get the right filters.
personal experience on a 72 typeIV 1700 stock, changed oil used a fram "tough guard" i think it was a ph8 or something like that, pretty universal filter, and 5 min into the "after oil change drive" BOOM no oil pressure, can had separated from base, good thing i was only a couple blocks from home. never again will i use any thing but mahle/mann filters.
i cant imagine the pressure you running but im fairly certain that at speed the pressure is gonna be too much for those filters

My Opinion
If you blow a filter don't blame the filter or the brand of the filter. Fix your relief valve that is messed up and not working properly. And at the same time if your engine overpressures, it would be so much nicer blowing a filter than the oil cooler or it's seals.
Another problem is that a few years ago either EMPI or Bugpack (don't remember which) sent out some bad filter adapters. You can't assume that new parts are good to go. One problem was the the nipple holding the filter was not perpendicular the peremeter filter sealing surface. Bad machining. When the filter was installed the seal would be tight on one side and loose on the other side. Normal engine pressure would blow the seal. The other issue on some adapters was they included the wrong nipple. The nipple was way to short and the filter would engage only about 2 threads. The silly parts houses would say that it was the correct nipple. But the manufacturer would be real quick to mail out the longer correct nipple. Make sure you get full thread engagement in the filter. Which brings up another point. If the nipple came seperate with the adapter make sure you install it correctly. The serrated portion goes into the adapter. Always check for ample thread engagement into the adapter as well as the filter. The adapter is aluminum and the threads arn't as strong.
Your deep sump doesn't have any bearing on this subject. Your 30mm pump could, but you wouldn't (shouldn't) be running at high speed with cold oil anyway. I also have a 30mm pump.
Didn't you imply that you have a T-1 engine? So evidently you have a remote adapter and filter. If that is the case why do you want to use one of the real small filters? |

| Mobil-1 makes a better constructed/filtering filter than both Mahle or Mann. But it will cost 10.99. Is rated at 99%+ first pass filtering efficiency. It uses a synthetic media for filtering versus paper or foam. |
