Not much VW going on in NY, but there's plenty to see in NYC and surrounding area.

New York State is really big. For instance, it's about an 8 hour drive to go from New York City to Niagara Falls. I think there are better things to do than rent a car.

If it's your first time in the US you might want instead to consider spending 4 or 5 days just traveling around New York City on the subway and the buses. New York City has an excellent transit system, which I have found to be the equal of Paris or London.

Then you might want to take Amtrak (train) from New York City to see Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. You can make the trip to Philadelphia and back in one long day, but for Boston or Washington you will probably want to stay in those cities one night and come back the next day. All those cities have large youth hostels if you don't mind staying in one of them for a night. Taking the train will give you a better picture of the real US than driving on the highway.

With that I think you will have squeezed an awful lot into 10 days. Yes, there isn't a whole lot of VW activity in this part of the US, especially during the winter, but feel free to PM me if you want more info or if you even want to get together one day to talk VW's. I'm about 1/2 hour outside of NYC on the Amtrak train line to Washington. I'm also about 15 minutes away from Newark International Airport.

A good idea. I'll mention it to him if we do make the connection.

If you plan to stay in new york city be prepared to pay $7. 00 to $ 8.00 per half hour to park your car PLUS TAX

I think people on vacation often try to do too much. I prefer to stay in one location and see it well. You could spend an entire year exploring New York City alone. And though I am not a big fan of the city, there is much too see. I have found the city and it's inhabitants extremely rude and at times scary. My first time there, the taxi driver tried to turn around while driving and choke me! So then I decided to try the subway. After going through the turnstile, I saw a woman laying with her head busted open & blood everywhere & the police were getting a statement. On another trip, I entered a camera store. No one else was in there. No clerk or anything. I looked around and finally someone came out and said "Can I help you with something". I said, "I am not sure of what I want yet". The clerk replied, "if you don't know what you want, get the hell out of here"! I am not making this up. I have only been to NYC I think four times and have many more stories like these. The place is a shithole of civilization but it does have its good points. If you can stand the smell of overflowing sewers.

Come to think of it, the train down to see Uzi's busses might be a good idea. He has a nice collection. Now I should tell the story about the nice black fellow from the city of "brotherly love" I shared a bottle of wine with on the train. hehehehe.

Viva la France.

Well, he said he was going to get here December 22, I gave him my phone number, and so far I haven't heard from him. I didn't tell him to dial "1" before the area code. Maybe that's the problem.

For the rest of TheSamba who may be following this, here is a picture of Benjamin and his camper at a Christmas BBQ in France:

Ben is on the right. He and Caroline are a very nice young couple. Ben is crazy about split busses. He described some fun trips they have taken to the south of France as well as to England in the camper. Ben is in the auto parts and tools business and also does body work so he is definitely in the right hobby. He did most of the work other than paint on his camper restoration. Caroline and Ben are looking forward to their next trip to the US, to California, maybe to coincide with the Classic.

I drove them around NYC, took them to a big mall where they found some very good bargains on Levi's and other clothes, showed them my Beetle, went to Barnes and Noble looking for VW magazines, and had dinner with them and my wife at a popular Tex-Mex restaurant.
