Hi, I was wondering if there are any places that can take an old Saphire I radio gut it out and modernize it, but still have the classic/stock look. I would realy love to have a saphire I radio just with FM and modern technology in it. So if you know of any places that do such a thing please post your reply. Thanks

Hey all, yeah, I spoke to retrosound last week about one for my 69, they just got some black faceplates that work perfectly for 68+ and the tech guy told me they'll have a Chrome sapphire type plate in Mid October --they just started shipping the black faceplate, looks really good, and they have metal knobs too--- I've got one on order, my vintage mustang forum buddies really like this radio... Cheers all... John

would their older beetle radio fit a '62 bus? It would have had a sapphire 1, so I would think it'd fit.

As I understand it that black plate unit they have up there for the 68-85 vw has the following dims, which are the same dims as the sapphire: 192mm wide x 57 mm H the shaft hole distance is measured 131 mm Center to center --- the tech guy Chris told me that the face opening of the plate is sized down to accept their 3.5 w x 1.5 radio face (which is generally the same size as the vw dash opening--- they claim they are the only company that makes this type of plate that caters to vw--- I believe them because I tried to find out if custom autosound has something like the retrosound plates and they dont--- I don't know if I'm allowed to post links but I'll look into the rules of this forum--- my Mustang forum lets me--- dinnertime--- later-- John
Here's a pic they put up on their flickr site of that sapphire plate, don't know if this will work, you may have to copy and paste: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3010/2904907487_b556b8444d_b.jpg
Here's a link to the 68 + faceplate w/ radio that I ordered... http://www.retrosoundusa.com/products/details/id/80 |

You can find Saphire FM radios. About the only modern feature you might want to add is an aux input.
