Hey Guys! I have to write a short paper on an advertisement for a product that was available pre-1960 and is still available today. So... I chose a beetle! Anyone have any good print ads from the 1950s for a beetle? Can you give me a link or a pic? I don't need the actual copy. Thanks.

Volkswagen didn't begin formal advertising in the U.S. until late in 1959. Prior to that there were just a few watercolors from Germany, and a small series of ads in trade publications for the Transporter.
I'm not sure you're posting in the right forum for this... |

A early 60's ad would do too! I found a few in a search, but I am willing to see what others have. Why is this not the right forum? It is the beetle forum, right? |

Air cooled Beetles are NOT available today. The water cooled New Beetle is a completely different product.
Do a paper on the Levi 501 jeans. They are exactly the same today that they were in the 50's |

| A lot of food items available today have been around since the 60's. Kellogg's Corn Flakes, for instance. Or Aunt Jemima's Pancake Mix and Syrup. Or Campbell's Soup. You could write about how the advertisements and the packaging have changed since then to reflect changing attitudes about race, the role of women in society, and concerns about diet and health. |

I do know that air cooled beetles are not available today! It is still a beetle and is sufficient for the needs of the paper. I found a few ads I am going to work with. I am comparing a 1966 Beetle ad and a 200X Golf GTI ad. One ad states:
"We made the car go faster and the engine go slower"
The new ad states:
"Enjoy more horsepower. The new Golf GTI Edition 30"
Thanks for the help. The professor approved the advertisements. I would post the pics, but I lost the links already  |

Virginia Slims! "You've come a long way baby!" They're pre-1970 and they're still killing people today! In fact I think the brand is 40 years old this year, it's outlived a lot of it's customers! |

| Do a search for the ad agency Doyle Dane Bernbach (DDB). Their campaign for VW in the 60's revolutionized the ad biz and is consider to this day the as the best ad campaign of all time. |

Sounds like it has potential to be an excellent paper. Do a search in the classifieds for "ad" in section: "Other - literature/manuals"; this will get you some more of the DDB ads rather than sales brochures. Some examples:
This is a quintessential DDB ad and probably the most famous:

If you write this paper, please tell us what VW dealers are still selling air cooled, rear-engined Bugs. |

The fabric weight, patterning and findings are different on 501s these days.

 Its still a beetle.... just evolved to match the times
I always thought that all VW owners were cheery and upbeat.... part of the reason owning a bus appealed to me so much. However, after a month or so on the forums, posts such as these have shown me that there are some crabby volks out there. Lighten up dude! |
