Well the plan was to pull the engine and trans and install the new trans. Hubby and I have never worked on VW's before so this was a learning experience. It took us most of the day Saturday to get the dang things out!! The trouble was with some of the bolts not coming out, the exhaust had to be cut off, so getting new exhaust Tuesday too! (BONUS!) Then we fretted a while about not being able to the engine out of the engine bay cause the car wasnt up high enough. But then we just set it down as low as possible and left it there. No biggie. I have since read on here all the little tricks...
The trans replacement went pretty quick, then getting the engine back in, getting it lined up, etc. was tough... until he said, "honey, put your hands right here..." and dink, went right in.... (its all in the hands)
Since then it has been taken back out and put back in again. It went much faster this time. For some reason the new clutch wouldn't work at all. So took it out and put the old one back in. Now the engine slides right in like it was buttered.
We had a lot of fun doing it, it is very easy now that we know what we are doing.
Hubby is currently finishing hooking up the fuel line and checking things out.
Cant wait to drive it tomorrow! |

| I would give that new clutch a shot, just make sure that it is properly aligned. Do you have a clutch alignment tool? a 10mm deep socked with some tape on the end works just as well |

Use your imagination.... man and wife in the garage with the VW.... that's a bitchin' scene all on its own...
There are not too many women who are willing to get greasy with an old VW. |
