i replaced the frame head on my super beetle w/ a brand new reproduction frame head. now i am trying to slide my shift rod back in and it doesnt want to fit. The part of the frame head i am talking about is where is in the center of the frame head right in between the control arm mounting brackets. it is almost like the reproduction frame head is tighter in that area than in the stock frame head. i no longer have the stock frame head for comparison so i dont know. has anyone else had this problem or know of it? any suggestions?

Thanks,
Tom

Just curious, why did you take the shiftrod out to replace the frame head?

i am doing a complete restoration of the car and putting a new shift rod in. i had the the chassis powdercoated so i had to remove the shift rod bushing so it wouldnt melt when it was baking in the oven.

Is the body back on the car yet? I'm wondering if it is still off you may be able to force the rod through ?

yes the body is still off the car. I tried greasing the shift rod it just seems it is to tight. I also have to be careful the gas line is right there. The only thing i can think of is that the reproduction frame head is small in that particular section than the original. I dont remember it being that hard to take out and i beleive the shift rod came out pretty easy with the old stock frame head on.

Take picture looking into the tunnel from the front.
I just did a shift rod on my '72 super.
