Hiya Bow,
It can be and has been done. But be aware that placing a fully automatic transmission in a Bug will involve some heavy duty modifications.
You might want to point your browser at www.vwar.org for more information (pictures too!) on this conversion. |

| Easiest most sensible way is to sell it and buy one with an automatic. |

They never came with an automatic from the factory, only as standard shift and as an autostick (essentially a clutchless standard shift). |

I have heard about a conversion from a type 3 being possible but quite intricate.
I would go with the stick shift or get an auto stick bug, if she doesnt want to drive a regular stick. Or get a type 3 automatic. |

Thanks for all your responses. For those of you that have wives involved in car's knows that , they want a car a certain way, and isn't it more of a challenge to convert or modify a car to what YOU or someone else wants. Anyone can restore back to original spec, with enough money ! Thats why both of my sons have built custom / modified vw beetles and fastbacks that have won car shows, and get alot more attention than a stocker.
2 69 fastbacks 87 golf gti 16v
1 73 fastback 86 golf gti 2.0 16v
72 super
70 super
69 standard beetle
67 squareback
72 squareback
68 notchback
72 standard beetle |
