What's the best way for a rookie to tell if new shocks are needed on a 74 standard beetle? Thanks, :?

If you are getting new shocks, I highly recommend KYB G2Rs. Some folks like the stock oil filled and more power to them - I am running them on 2 cars and absolutely love them......Better handling and good ride - both are a good thing.

I always compare my ride in my bug with my other cars (a 91 Explorer and a Mazda Millenia). Surprisingly, my bug rides better than the SUV. Not a very scientific test, but it works.

Right now, when I hit a bump, the car feels like I'm riding on stone tires.

Check your tire pressure first - that can make a HUGE difference - also bias plys are much stiffer than radials. I had a new set of radials put on and they had them pumped up to 35 - rode like a freakin ox cart till I got home and reset the pressure.

Go with Boge oil filled ones. I've used KYB's on by bug and my Porsche, they are not great at absorbing the bumps. Too stiff. If you have to go gas filled route I would go with Bilistien, Koni or Boge. The Porsche 924 shocks are the same as Super Beetle.
