Now that I see that Royal Blue, that is actually the color we were shooting for, oh well. It is being sprayed on in the driveway.

when you say that you are rolling it, do you mean with a regular paint roller? and do you sand it down and primer it beforehand or are you just painting over the other paint?

And yes, standard paint roller I bought at Home Depot along with the paint.

wont that leave little bumps from the fuzz on the roller?

How the hell did Nigel get involved in this thread? Has the queen banned less than perfect paint jobs and anyone caught driving a home painted vehicle will have it impounded and immediately crushed while you watch at the roadside?

Spend the extra buck and get the lint free roller for smooth surfaces.

Do you think I could do this over a faded rustoleum spray can job or should it be stripped?

Oh yeah, I remember it now like a bad mushroom trip :? , thanks for bringing that up EZ :-& .

BTW 56Ovalbug, that green panel still rocks.

Stuco,

I would just scuff up your paint now to get any flaws down in the curerent paint. I would use 220-330 grit sandpaper and do it by hand... The rustoleum paint is designed to be used without primer.

enjoispammy8,

you use a 4 inch foam roller. I also use a 2 inch roller for the tight spots...

If ya'll wanna make it easier, pick up a cheap HVLP sprayer. After the last coat you don't even have to clean the gun. Just throw it away:

The Guac is getting painted next summer with that.

I mixed green, yellow and red to get REALLY close to the original sage green.

Do you remember the mix that you ended up with to get that sage green color? It looks good!

X2...

x3. Do you remember about what the mix was? I'm thinkin' about going this route. Thanks!

I did mine to the consistency of milk. They say about 20% mineral spirits...

You can see how my dash turned out. I just did this recently.

I know many frown on the roller method, but if you have no experience or equipment spray painting, as I don't, it was a great alternative to leaving it as it was, especially since I was getting ready to sell...
before:

and after:

It was stock Rustoleum red; thin it considerably, 2 or 3:1 (paint:water), so it pours almost like water and will self-level quickly. It took about 5 coats, with some wet/dry sanding after every 2 coats. About 30-35 hours of work. I didn't even buff it, which I believe would have improved the shine even more. I was quite satisfied, and the final product amazed everyone I had told how I was going to paint it. Prospective buyers loved how it looked.

I rolled on another paint that I got at my local hardware store called Rus-Kil. They could mix any color I chose which was nice.. It cost about $25/gallon. I used rustomleum white spray cans on the bumbers and wheels. Sandpaper cost me more than the paint. I am happy with the results. It has a little bit of a texture to it but I kinda like the utility look of it and it looks like it can take some abuse.. Great to see other the other cheap paint jobs..

I started off wanting to paint it lime green. I mixed close to one liter (one medium can) of green to 8 liters (two big cans) of yellow to get lime green. Once I got that color I said "Whoa! that's way too bright!" That when I started to aim close for the original color. You can see my color matching attempts in the first pic on the center panel just below the slider window. I think I added close to one liter of fire red to get the Sage green color. I think I used just over half of the paint so I have lots of touch up paint left.

So you used the same three colors that barefootwestie used to come up with Sage Green?! That's wild. I never would've thought about adding red to the mix. But I'm not one of the gifted paint people that can look at a color and visualize what components make it up. Thanks for the proportions. I think I can mix some up now. Peace!

Am I reading this correctly? You used water to cut the Rustoleum? I thought it was oil based, or did I miss something along the way?

 Sorry. That does sound funny!
Not water; odorless mineral spirits is what I used and it worked well, dried quickly.
Also, for tinting paint: ACE Hardware has a rustoleum-like paint, "X-O Rust," that they can and will tint for you any of their ACE colors.

apparently its illegal to paint your own car in california. do you sambafolks think this applies to rolling it on? i think it may only mean if your spraying it on.
