Quote: Sounds like your gage or sending unit isn't too accurate. Here's a good guide to the design and troubleshooting of the system:
http://www.nls.net/mp/volks/htm/fuel_ga.htm
Or you can just learn your gage's nuances and live with it.
I went to this site and did the test at the bottom of the page titled "Testing the gauge". It passed both of the tests. My problem is I used to never have a gas gauge problem...took out the tank a yr or so ago and when I put it back in I had a gas gauge problem. My needle only goes to about 1/2 or so full when tank is all full. I cleaned off the connector on the wire and on the tank and it went to about 1/4. I'm thinking to put a new connector on the wire because it seems kind of loose.
No, this Beetle is not new to me, I've had it 30 yrs, I just haven't been here on the Samba much in the last 2-3 yrs. I'm trying to get this Bug ready to be my daily driver....I'm selling my gas hog Suburban. Quote: |

| If the float/arm isn't hanging up, you may need to bend the arm so full is full, etc. |

It's a very sensitive system. Pretty much any ground/wire/connector issues will cause it to malfunction. People spend alot to money on parts they don't need "fixing" it when all they really needed to do was clean connections and insure wires are sound.
If the issue started when you pulled it I would suspect you bound up the float when you reinstalled it (very common) or you have a loose wire. |

I took the sending unit off on Sunday and looked at the float. Bent the float arm one way and it was worse, so I bent the float arm the other way and it was back the way it was with the problem.
When I ground the connector to the body of the car (where I hook the ground from the radio), the gauge needle went all the way to 1/1 like it used to in the past. The tank is pretty full, I saw so myself when I took the sending unit off Sunday. I cleaned the connector off on the sending unit but it did not change much so that is why I am thinking I need to change the connector on the wire. Sound like a winner?

| Perhaps your fuel sending unit has gone bad. |

| I wonder how well your tank is grounded? Been painted recently? |

It was cleaned and painted with the kit from POR15 about 3-5 yrs ago. What can I do to ground it better, after the tank is not as full? |
