Hi,
OK, probably more than you wanted to know....
The Ghia in your Avatar is a type 14 Karmann Ghia.
The Ghia you ask about is also a Karmann Ghia BUT was a Type 34.
It was put into production in 1961 and based upon the Type 3 Floor Pan and running gear. Production ended in 1969.
It wasn't ever offered as a convertible and was made in both Left Hand and Right Hand Drive. It was not ever imported into the USA.
This was the first model the VW ever stopped production of.
If you ever hear the term "razor edge" ghia, this is it.
The Karmann factory in Osnabruck produced this car and after its demise the line was used to build the 914 Porsche.
The entire production run on had 42,562 units produced.
The ugliness (or beauty if you will) lived on in the Brazilian type 3 in the early 70's.
IF you find one, snag it for it will only go up in value!

The designers were actually borrowing heavily from an American air-cooled rear-engine car
The Corvair:

Hmmm, so in designing the 1961 Type 34, the Ghia studios copied the 1960 Corvair? And they managed to do the design, and get the tooling completed so they could ship cars, all in less than one year? Not very likely.
The 1961 BMW also resembled the Corvair in the rear. More copycatting?
