Does anyone know if the American Eagle Porsche replica 914 2 Litre wheels are any good? Has anybody had any experience with them?

vwracerdave Tue Oct 14, 2008 6:57 pm

There are just as good as any other aftermarket wheel. They are also heavier then the real thing.

The real ones are forged... worth the extra money and trouble restoring them.

Aren't the offsets different also? I know the real things have a 40mm backset

Glenn Tue Oct 14, 2008 7:39 pm

Real ones are ET41. I'd assume the repros are also ET41 and not ET25 like a VW.

What would the diff offset mean to trying to put these on a type 3...

This is what the add says,

5.5 INCH WIDE X 15 INCH with 4 inch backspace

Can these be run easily on a lowered type 3??
What size tires?
:?: :?: :?: :?: :?:

Have you got rims and tires on it now if so plug your numbers in to this

web site and you'll have an idea of what will and what won't fit.

My girl had those wheels on her '72 notch.
They look o.k. but nothing more then that.
On the originals the spokes are a bit curved and
the edges are rounded.
A lot nicer the these repops wich have machined spokes that are dead-flat with sharp edges.

I wouldn't buy them again (well my girl did but whatever) i'd rather
search a bit more for the real deal.

As for tires; 145x65 fitted nice.
I also tried 175x65 but they rubbed like hell (looked better though)

145x65 lowered

I read somewhere that these will not fit a a Ghia with disc brakes but this ad does not mention this.
Has anyone tried them on a Ghia?

American Eagle Series 073 (15 x 5.5 w/ 35 mm offset) w/ 185/65R15 tires on my 66 ghia convertible w/ four wheel discs, lowered via an adjustable stock width front beam.

The only issue I've heard of, and this is true for nearly any higher offset 15" rim, is that the lower ball joint may need to be clearanced to avoid rubbing when using drop spindles. For stock spindles, I'm not aware of any issues.

I called CIP1 today and they did say the rims should be fine. They gave some specs on the rims: ET35 back space 4-1/2". Im gonna order a set, those look great on your car !

Here is the listing that says they do not fit:

I got a 72 Ghia with disks in the front. Cip1 says yes they fit ...Mid America says they dont.

i think somewhere i read that on a ghia you have to shave the caliper or use a small spacer
but i dont have a ghia

72Ghia Wed Feb 17, 2010 2:59 pm

I got a reply from Cip1. They said there are no known issues with the Ghia disk brakes and replica wheels. They did say there is another manufacturer in addition to American Eagle "MSW" or something like that, which they are purchasing wheels from. They did say you could grind the nub on the caliper down a little if there was a clearance issue or as mentioned get a spacer. The replicas they sell are et35 which is the same as the American Eagle replica wheel. I just ordered a set and will post any issues. If they dont fit I'll be swapping some polished 8-spokes off a Bug and putting them on the Ghia. I test fitted the 8-spokes last night and they fit fine with the Ghia disk brakes.

Just incase anyone is interested the replica wheels stocked by CIP1 fit just fine on a 72 with disks and look great.

Thinking about polishing them out to look OG?

Wasn't true "OG" from Porsche unpolished on the 914-4's?

Mike Fisher Fri Feb 26, 2010 3:23 pm

I don't even remember! I was mainly referring to the black paint I don't remember on OG wheels? Did my wheels have black paint on them originally?

jlew Fri Feb 26, 2010 7:16 pm

I think this is what OG looked like from the factory.....

I don't think there was ever an OG Fuch 2.0 set with the black painted parts. I could be wrong...
