  View original topic: idling woes

Hello all,

I recently had the engine on my 71 AT FI Squareback rebuilt. At the same time, I had it switched to carbs. We installed 32 PDSIT German Solexes which came off a 67 and were rebuilt.

I've got the carbs balanced, the engine idling at 1200. No smoke, pretty smooth. The problem is, when I put it in drive, I cannot sit at a light or the engine starts to shake and run ragged, then it dies.

We recently switched the jets from 55's down to 50's because of this problem. We're thinking of going to 45's. I'm at a loss here as to how to solve this problem.

thanx a bunch,
L.

Welcome Lori. Did changing from the 55s to the 50s help a lot, or was it just a marginal change? I'm only asking, because Sue's car when it had carbs on it, was running passive 55 cutoff jets (non-electrical), and we had to set the idle speed to 1000 rpms (rather than 900) to get it to idle in gear. What are you using for a balance pipe? We used a 3/8th hose with a "T" in it for the vacuum modulator (to the trans), and the larger hose made it easier to balance the carbs.

Do you know what the jetting inside the carbs are? I think Dave Hall (from the list) has them on his site, as to what you should have. If he doesn't, he could let you know what you need, as he had them on the list about 6 months ago (maybe searching the archives might help). I hope this helps, and let us know on the jetting.

it did help quite a bit with the smoking---I only get small puffs of black smoke now when sitting in drive. Before I was getting it while driving upon acceleration. Unfortunately, my 55's were the electric kind---the 50's are just the plain ones. Cheap, tho.

Is hers automatic? I had to set mine much higer to get it to idle in drive.

I'm usinf fairly large hosing with a T in it. Not sure offhand of the sise, but it's much bigger than the fuel line.

wow, I had to look back thru my notes to find that. We went from the Chilton manual.

According to my notes,

Left side has:
x130 main
155 air correction
50 pilot jet

Right side is:
x127.5 main
120 air correction
50 pilot

Dave wrote to me and mentioned something about the pump not putting out as much fuel in an automatic as in a manual. Wondering if the pump needs to be adjusted somehow?

Lori
