There are two types of shock absorbers for pre 50 beetles.
I belive that later one is the one with a metal dust cover as this one:
and earlier ones are with rubber dust cover as this:
I would like to know which one would be correct for my vw from 1948, when did they change?
Which one do you have on your pre 50 vw´s? |

My '47 came with the rubber dust covers. Here's a shot of them before restoration:

Thank Johnshenry and RareAir.
So now we know that the rubber dust cover shocks are correct for a beetle from 1947 and older. I have read somewhere on the samba that the metal dust cover is correct for 1949 beetle.
Is there anyone that has a vw from 1948 and would loke to tell us what kind of shocks they have?
Thank you for the information |

I have a very bad november -48, it has the older style, and another Swedish -48 also has them.
There is a third style, it looks like the older but has a small container in the downside end, when was that used?? I have been told that it is a -49 style but no proof.
I dont have any pic but now but I can fix that in a few days. |

| Erich Kircher ("Genrich" here on thesamba) has a '48 that is fairly original, you might PM him and ask.... |

Here is a pic of the 3rd style of the shocks.
They are not showen in any technical drawing.
I found this NOS one at Wolfsburg swap market. It was only used for technical teaching.
I have put it in peaces, look here:

One of those odd shocks with a "rudder" was for sale from Poland a year or so ago on the samba if I remember correctly. Have no other info on it.
