I am thinking about selling my 73 Thing and was just wondering what it's worth. It runs and drives great but it needs oil cooler seals. It was painted a couple months ago and it looks good from a distance but it's not a pro job. There is rust in the wheel wells but nothing serious. The interior is complete and has no tears in the seats or dash pads.I have installed a rebuilt carb, new alternator, fuel pump, distributor all the tuneup goodies and some other parts that I cant think of right now.I also put a new top on it 4 months ago.The windows are there but need work.Everything electrical works as it should. All it needs to be a daily driver are oil cooler seals.
Oh yeah,I forgot to mention that the floors have been replaced with steel but are solid and sturdy.

| Compare yours to the ones in the classifieds and price accordingly. That's what I'd do. |

| We were at Barrett-Jackson and saw the Thing that sold for $17,500... Very nice car but not my style. I like everything to be stock, it had allot of other parts and upgrades not from a Thing. If you look at Barrett-Jacksons web site they have sold Things for $17,500-$32,000 the last few years. I agree with MercurialThing, look at the samba and see what it compares with. $5,000-$10,000 buys a nice driver. |

Honestly, Barrett-Jackson is over-priced and they don't always sell what I would consider to be the top specimens in the ACVW world.
Some people even consider The Samba to be a bit overpriced, but if you have a good idea of what other cars are selling for, you can at least be in the ballpark, then adjust up or down depending upon how quickly you need to sell it. |

There was probably less duct-tape on the Things that sold at the Barrett-Jackson auction ;) Presentation is important! Your car looks pretty sound and I'd guess that the top is new; it's too bad that some of the windows are in rough shape.
For years, I'd heard and seen that the price for an complete runner was about $5k. I'd say that it's crawled up to $6k or $7k in recent years. When you check prices, make sure you find prices for sold cars, not asking prices. I'm convince there are a few people who ask outrageous sums who really don't expect the car to sell for that - maybe putting their car in the classified for $50k thinking that if anyone buys it for that, they'd sell it. Or, perhaps the wife said "You've got to sell it!" and he replies, "I put it up for sale, just haven't had an offer!"
Cars almost never appreciate. The buyer will need to replace the windows, and it'll cost $500-$1500 depending on which windows. I'm not sure that replacing the windows will raise the value that much. |

| Unless you're in financial extremis, I wouldn't sell it. It looks solid and you know it's a lot of fun. You'll miss it when it's gone. |

Yes I know the windows are rough but I am not looking to get Barrett-Jackson money.I have listed it in the classifieds for $3200 and the oil cooler seals have been replaced. :D |

All the cars I own today I couldn't afford to buy if I needed to. |

 $3200 :!: I'm affraid you're robbing yourself at that price. You should at least try for a while at $4500-5000. Minimum. Just my 2 cents though. |

Ditto.
Dude, I paid $3500 for mine and it's not nearly as nice as yours. To top it off, everyone I talked to at the show I recently attended said I got a square deal. Ask for more money. |

| I agree $3,200 is too low!! I paid $6,500 for mine and the guy was asking $10,000... All the cars I looked at and have seen in person for $3,000 (in So Cal) needed allot of work. $6,000 + is a fair price for a nice driver and yours looks like it. |

| Thanks guys.I know $3200 is low but I got a good deal on it and I want to make sure someone else gets a good deal. And even though the rust in the wheel wells isnt serious,it is there so I took that into consideration when setting a price.Wierd thing is,even at this price I have not had 1 person come to look at it.Lots of calls and emails but nobody has seen it. |

People around here are not buying toys or even every day drivers right now. Things changed a couple months ago. People are not spending money on anything that is not absolutely necessary. Odd how the supposedly high priced mussel cars are showing up in the want adds all over the place right now. If your stock is down %40 no reason why your collector car can't be also.
I can see were you would have to price it -$4000 to get a quick sale especially in the fall. You may have to wait to spring, but @ $3200 I'm surprised it did not sell immediately.
The weirdest thing is why people get dozens of emails about collector cars and you never here from them again. It's like there is hundreds of day dreamers out there.
Regardless, way to sneak an add in here  |
