well, i just got my bug fixed after a while of it sitting in my garage. now i had a mechanic put in a new turnkey becasue i didnt have the time to work on it. now it was driving fine for the first day with out a problem. however late last night on the drive home it seemed like it started to sputter or misfire. a little jerky and that was mosly in 4th gear. however now this morning it seems to do it on and off in all gears, any ideas why? the mechanic said to run it with premium for the most part, and that he did a tune up and timing and all that after he put the turn key in, so im not sure what to do or even where to start, im realtivly new to bugs and working on them. i do have a 6000 or 6 month warrenty, however the shop is 80 miles away and i dont want to drive it on the freeway with this happening...

Did he check the fuel system? Sounds kinda like fuel starvation.
What was involved in the tune-up? For a turn-key, it should be valves and carb, IMO.
Premium fuel should not be a requirement either, unless this is some hi-po, high compression engine.

The mechanic may be 80 miles away but he does have a phone doesn't he?

Being that he just did the install and you have had the car only 48 hours have you called him to ask him what he thinks it could be?

I agree with the fuel starve/trash in the fuel system. If the car sat up for a bit or if you never have had the tank cleaned and lines purged you could have all kinds of trash in the tank that just sucked up... or it could be a simple as a loose wire to the carb/solenoid or other simple item.

yeah, i called earlier and he was out, however i will call back. im it was sitting for about 7 months. and i doubt that it was flushed. how do i go about doing that?

maybe dirt/debre in the gas tank has made its way to the carb jets? if it has been sitting for some time.

just doing it in 4th makes me think the fuel pump! they are on the classifieds and on ebay like $20 if you look around. Just make sure to get the correct one (alt or gen)

Seems it's not just in fourth gear though.

just take the fuel line off of the tank and pump/ fuel filter wherever your line first leads to. Then take an air hose and blow it out. I had to do this to a 75 I once owned. But you might want to check the pump also. The newer non rebuildable ones like to go out. BTW, what size engine is in the car?

Don't do anything until you speak with the mechanic! You may be doing more harm.

Then follow his instructions. You don't want to do ANYTHING that may void his warranty. Speak with him and do what he tells you. Don't do anything on your own without speaking to him first.

Thats a great point.

Thats just the thing, as it started wearing out it would only show it's self in 4th gear, but after a while, it wouldn't pump enough fuel regardless of RPM

Don't forget to check the pivot pin on the fuel pump. My turn-key, put in april, and pin tried to fall out in September and I did kinda sorta look at it once in a while.
(Of course it wouldn't happen to me!!)
Wife didn't appreciate the half mile walk home, especially from my car.
