I've got a 71 beetle that I need to adjust the rear brakes on. Which way should the adjusters turn in order to tighten them? I realize there are two on each side and will turn opposite of each other. Do you turn them clockwise or counterclockwise to tighten the brakes? It seems that counterclockwise (relative to center) would tighten the shoes against the drums, is this correct?

What I do, is when I look at them, I imagine my hand turning the bolt that is coming out of the adjuster, unscrewing it to bring it out, and thus, the shoes closer to the drum. Then I turn the adjusting star the other direction.

What that amounts to, is as you look the backing plate there, the right adjusting star needs to be turned bottom to top to tighten. The left one needs to be turned top to bottom to tighten the shoe.

As above, as you look at them from underneath the car. Same for the front except vertical on regular beetle, so consider the one on lower "clock face" as the one on the right and higher on "clock face" as the one on the left.
