I'm thinking about taking a shot at building a 1600/1641 all from scratch.
I don't want a rotrod. This would be my first build, so I don't know much.
What all do I need and about how much should it cost?
Thanks! |

case $500
good c/w crank $175
cam, Engle 100 or stock $75
lifters $50
piston/ cylinders $175
heads, stock, 041's $300
rockers n' pushrods n' tubes $200
flywheel, stock weight $100
carbeuretion, 34 pict $125
Valve covers, tin, shroud, generator/ alternator $?
manifold, end castings $125
exhaust?
main rod and cam bearings $100
rods $100
cylinder studs $75
fan $?
pulleys?
good gland nut $30
gasket kit $10
That's it in a nutshell, all prices are right off the top of my head and indicate NEW parts, could be way less depending on how well you can scrounge. I would have your engine case machined for full flow so you can run a modern filter, worth every cent. |

Add dist., coil, alt. stand, plugs, wires, engine tin hardware (screws, bolts)
oil pump.oil filler /breather,fuel pump, shims for setting end play, oil screen and cover plate, v-belt. Various machine work (balancing, etc ). Oil cooler, Dist. drive gear for crank, dist. drive gear assembly, oil slinger.
That's all I can think of.
Best thing about building your own is you know what's in there. Setting compression ratio and balancing is a priority!! Have fun and don't wait too long to get those parts they are going up in price even as you read this!! |

Don't mean to threadjack, but this is kind of related..
who/where do you guys recommend for balancing? I don't mean specifically VW shops, unless it has to be done by them. I'm ignorant about it, but I know for somethings, an actual shop will charge a lot more than someone who can do it as a side thing. If that doesn't make sense, what I mean is, for example, having a custom exhaust created by a speed shop cost a lot more than having it down by a mom and pop muffler shop. Same work, less money.
I ask because I'm going to be building a 2276 from scratch and would like to save some cash where I can.. |

Don't skimp in this area. If your engine is not balanced correctly you will reduce engine life dramatically!!! Check with your local VW Clubs they can steer you in the right direction as to who is the best. 8) |

I'm thinking either of the two local clubs I hang out with will recommend members of the clubs. and They might very well be fully able to do it, but I hate doing business with friends just in case something doesn't work out, you know? |

| Just about any good engine grinder that's been in business for the last 30 years (in Finland that means just about every single one of them) should be familiar with VW-engines. This is on the other hand just my experience with Finnish grinders, where the Beetle was one of the most common cars back in the day. As said, check with the locals. If you want to get advice in a bit more interesting way, find the local petrol station where all the old-timers hang out all day, they usually know this type of stuff... |

Send me your email adress and I'll email you my build list for my newly completed 2110. It lists every single part from the case to the tools to the hardware. It also lists the cost and where I purchased it. It of course contains everything else (carbs, new tin, etc.) but you can subtract that.
