Am I missing something? I can't find where the coupler is on my 72' super? I looked underneath around the steering box and looked under the gas tank and nothing! Do I have a special super without a coupler, or am I just a dumbass! All i'm seeing is U-joints.

thanks guys

I can't say for sure on your '72, but '73 Supers only have u-joints. There is no coupler. The u-joint is under the tank and you can see it turn when you turn the steering wheel.

Only Standard Beetles had Couplers.

All Super Beetles had U-Joints because the centerline of the steering box is 10" to left of the steering wheel.

Yes I know this is a real bad photo, but the steering box is mounted forward of the shock tower on the under side.
the u-joint bolts to the shaft on steering box, you can feel a clamp bolt & loosen it to remove the steering box.

Another thing to point out, you won't be able to get the shaft off of either the steering column or the steering box unless you completely remove the nuts and bolts from both ends. You can't just loosen them... Ask me how I know!!! :D
