A 1998 Audi A4, 1.8L Turbo, Quattro AWD with 90,000 miles in excellent condition for $3000.00? The KBB/NADA trade in value for this vehicle in fair condition is $3900. The retail is over $8000.00.

The owner has replaced the timing belt, clutch, and brakes and it has a new set of tires. The owner is a co-worker giving me a "buddy deal". The car has never been wrecked. It has heated leather seats, power sunroof, and it is all electric.

I know nothing about Audis, but this sounds like a good deal on the surface.

Inspect and Carfax ... so far, it sounds like a good deal to me.

work on late model vw's and audi's all day long. I can say with some certanty that you're going to have it in the shop quite frequently. Most of the issues we have with them are electrical problems. Mass air flow sensors, ABS control units, power windows, locks, seats, sunroofs, instrument clusters, etc. All the plastic crap on the inside sucks too (cup holders, center consoles, etc) and are usually dealer-only items, as all used stuff is in about the same condition. Stay away from the automatic or the tiptronic transmissons.

Other than that it's a great car. The chassis / suspension / engine / transmission is a solid platform. If well maintained and taken care of, it will be a decent car. An Acura or a Lexus would be a better car for the money IMO.
Oh, I forgot that every 5yrs or 80k miles, it's recommended to replace the timing belt. on 1.8t 4 cyl models my shop charges $1400, and on the 30v V6 it's in the neighborhood of $1600. You have to remove the front end of the car to get to the timing components. And that's basic maintenence. It's also the same for the passat (an audi with less chrome, leather and wood trim).

They are interference engines and if the belt does not get replaced in a timely manner, the valves will bend when the belt breaks. A cyl head rebuild on a 1.8t starts at $2900 and the V6 starts at $3500... and that's IF it didn't damage the pistons when the belt broke...
