Am i missing a seal or something ? I was just washing my new 72 super and as I start hosing off the hood, soapy water is running into the grill that is between the windshield and bonnet and right onto the gas tank, a few inches in front of about 100 exposed wires.

Is there some sort of cap or seal that closes off the grill from underneath ? Also, I would assume I should buy some sort of wiring cover.

Cetainly the good engineers at volkswagen did not intend for rain, snow and hose water to enter the trunk through this grill.

you are missing the fresh air box most likely.. see photo below

see that black box that is tiped over? it should be upright and the hood vents should line up with the box holes. it then drains through that black box (also called fresh air box if i am not mistaken) and drains through the bottom of the car.

you may be able to find a box either here on samba or the junk yard.

here is an example.. i have a 72 super, mine does not work though i do no need it to work.. its only job for me is re-directing the rain.

any idea how interchangeable they are ? from what model years will it fit ? will one from a standard fit a super ?

i dont think so because if i remember searching right, the standard looked different.

make sure you have the drain tube going through your car, looks like a 'j' tube between your gas tank and wires.

if you have a 72 super, stick with that.. samba ad's are $20-40, that is cheap.

yes will do ... i just don't currently see one for sale here from a 1972

that link above i think is one.. it will fit the 71-72.. now, i dont have a 71 to compare the two but it should work.

The first link is for a 71-72 super, it looks just like mine. If you need the vents that go from the box to the dash send me a PM, I think I have an extra set laying around.
