75 super beetle. The red wire that goes to the coil? Mine has an inline fuse link. I'm guessing this is correct. What size fuse should be in the link?

There should be no fuse in he ignition circuit, unless it was added by the PO.
There is a fuse in the circuit going to the backup light switch though. From the coil, which way is that wire leading? If to the right, then it's probably the backup lights. It gets an 8amp fuse, if I remember right. But that wire was not red from the factory, it was black. In fact, all the wires that connect to the (+) side of the coil are supposed to be black.

Well the car wouldnt start yesterday. Didnt know what was going on so I just started looking around found the fuse and it looked burnt replaced it and the car fired right up! It is a red wire and it does go to the right.

very strange. pull the fuse out and see if it will start, that will tell you if it is ignition related or not. it should not have a fuse though if it is.

Does the red wire power up an electric fuel pump? If it is that is a dangerous way to do it and if you are upside down in a ditch with fuel pumping on your it will become obvious why it is.

The stock layout looks like this:

If i remember right mine went to the control unit. My fuse holder was corroded badly and had to replace it. Not 100% sure though, i'll try to look tommorow.
