What sound would a "bad bearing in the tranny" make when a car was dricing, or coming to a halt?

Really shouldn't make a noise. But from my own experience I would start by checking the rear axle nuts on the rear brake drums.

Also helps to safely jack up the rear of the car and turn the wheels by hand while you listen and feel for any ruffness.

Good time to change your transmission oil too. It's all part of trouble shooting.

It's good that you are looking for a possible problem before your get stranded.

I just had my trans repaired. It had a loud whine in all gears.
The mainshaft bearing was bad.
