View original topic: Bumper sticker removal & keeping the sticker

Maybe this is the proper forum to post this.

I have a '53 Oval that has the original owners faculty stickers on the bumper from when he taught at the University of South Carolina. I have replaced the overider bumpers that he had installed at some point with the proper euro bumpers and I want to transfer the stickers over to the new bumper. I know that some of you will say WHY? but I consider this part of the history of the car and I try to maintain as much of it as I can while also returning it back to its original equipment. So I am seeking advice before I attempt to remove it. Thanks for any and all advice.

The quick answer is to make friends with someone at a sign/ vynle/ printing shop and see if they can reproduce it. Original? No but its still technically "preserving" the heritage. This is how my friends get their citation's "X-11" & celebrity "eurosport VR" decals.

yeah you got to take it to a graphic artist to have it reproduced

Yeah, do not attempt to use water, razor blades etc to get that sticker up. Leave it alone.

I have seen where they can scan the sticker, and print it out right in front of you. I think they even did this on Overhaulin if I am not mistaken.

As a last resort to save the old sticker, you may have good luck with a heat gun. Heat the sticker until the glue softens and if the sticker is intact it may peel off for you in one piece. Go slow and lift gently.

if u can ...heat it from the backside...if u heat it from the front ...and get it too hot u can actually stretch the decal when u pull it .or u can actually burn it if it gets too hot ...been there and done that

So who can replicate a Bumper sticker? I want to replicate my original dealership sticker, and put one of the copies on a new blade, and store the original blade for safe keeping? The original sticker was put on when my 58 was sold new at Stateside Imported Cars, in Feb-March 1958?

Hi,

If you had some dimensions of the various aspects of that sticker it could be imported into a photoshop program, the sticker only digitally removed from the photo and then the pixels repaired, sized properly, etc.
You would need to determine the original color and then take the digital image to a print shop that does decals and they replicate it for you. It won't be cheap for a production run of 1 but can be done. Actually it can be done by you if you have the program and patience to use it.

It looks like the sticker was white with a blue printing on it. The white has worn away in most spots and the blue preserved the white for a longer period of time. The VW is circled by white, it think the letters were white and the entire blue shape had a white border.

My only concern about taking it down somewhere to be printed, is the "VW" logo? Most places won't touch anything if there is a copyright issue!
