Hi, I need help with the engine on my bug. It won't run right. It's a H5 engine in a 73 Super Beetle. I tried to set the timing on 0 but then it runs real bad ( stumbles on acceleration and blows flames out the tailpipe when reved up. The numbers on the dist. are JUR4 0231 137 035
113 905 205 T
I appreciate any help. Thanks[/youtube]

go through the whole tune up procedues/ points, valves, make sure plug wires are connected in correct order/ then advance the dist slightly till it runs

What carb do you have on it? Did you also set the timing to 0 deg with the vac line disconnected?

30pict2 Solex Carb
also i tryed setting the timing with the line off AND the line on, neither made it run better
It also has new plugs, wires, and the carb was rebuilt recently

Will the vacuum can on the distributor hold a vacuum?

Does it actually advance (use your timing light to verify) when you speed up the engine?

to the best of my knowledge yes

I think the carburetor is suspect, those Solex 30 pict 2's were notorious for some of the internal passages being un-cleanable when rebuilding them. Something about the right side mixture screw, IIRC.

Hi, Still having problems with the engine running right. Tried everything that different people have said to try. Still breaks up under load with very little power. Please help! Thanks :(

Personally, I'd first verify, for sure, the advance is functional. Then I'd ditch the 30PICT-2 and go with a 30PICT-1, or a 30PICT-3, as those are better carbs, IMHO.

Do you have a timng light where you could check for total advance? It should be around 30-32 with that distiributor.

Hi, Checked for advance and it seems to be working. Advance seems to be around 25. It looks like everyone thinks that my carb is the culprit. I would like to be sure before I spend the money on a new one. Are there any more tests that I can do? Thanks, Bill

You best money would be to have that German Solex carb rebuilt by someone that actually knows how to do it.... :-k .

Hi, Will a Solex 30 pic 1 0r 3 replace a pic 2 without any mods? How about a 28 or a 34? If the pic 2 is a all around bad carb, I think I would rather go with a known good one of a different model # Thanks :?:

glutamodo Mon Nov 24, 2008 5:10 pm

The 30PICT-2 is not an all-around bad carb, but it's certainly become one of the more problematic ones that VW/Solex made, mostly something that has developed over time.

The 30PICT-1 and 30PICT-3 both work just find in place of the 30PICT-2. The 28s will function as well. ( I'd go with a 1967 version of the 30PICT-1 myself. ) The 34s, well they won't fit that 1500 manifold (I assume it's a single port, you said H5 engine, plus I don't think the 30PICT-2 fits the aftermarket adapter for the H30/31 carb to mount it on the 34mm DP manifold)

Thank you for your input. I'll look for a 30 pic -1. I've been playing with this Beetle too long. Something has got to give. I hope a different carb is the answer. Thanks for everybodys input-- I sure appreciate the help

do you have points or electronic?

Randy in Maine Tue Nov 25, 2008 6:56 am

And stick your timing light and vacuum gauge on there to make sure that the distributor really is advancing with increased engine vacuum/speed. Sometimes they need to be cleaned up and relubricated.

Distributor: VW 113-905-205T, Bosch 0231 137 035 or 036
Timing Set At:: 0deg TDC Static or @ 800-950rpm w/strobe w/vacuum hose disconnected and plugged
Advance/Retard Range: Vacuum (Advance Only): 17-19deg @ 1.3 In. Hg, 32-35deg @ 3.2 In. Hg

Hi, My dist. has points

Hi, Finally got a Solex pict 30-3 to replace the pict 30-2. With this carb, the only way the car will idle is if the choke is almost all the way closed. It still lacks power. I'm ready to send it down the road. Does anybody have any more ideas? I sure need the help. Thanks for listening!

Is this the same problem you had with the first carb? Where did you get the carb from, is it new, or has it been rebuilt?

Also you said you only had 25 degrees total advance. I'm pretty sure that it should be more than that, double check your distributor.

glutamodo Yesterday 1:36 am

Yeah, the T distributor, when set statically at 0TDC should advance to around 32 degrees total.
