i am rebuilding a stock 1600 dp for my '74 beetle and i am having a problem with a clunk from the distributor drive shaft when i button the case together. everything seems to be lined up. the crank and the cam are in the right place, the end play in the distributor shaft is .050, the distributor is being held down by the clamp and i am still getting a clunk. well actually i am getting two clunks 180 degrees apart. one when the distributor is between 1 and 2 and the other... well 180 degrees out. i looked to see if i had galled any of the gears but they look ok. of course it all spins fine when i have the case open. any ideas?
thanks,

Remember your crankshaft turns 2 times for every rotation of the distributor, so both clunks are the same.
Could be a bad tooth on the cam gear. |
